    Iron Butt Ride

Completed my first Iron Butt Saddlesore 1000 on my C650GT over the weekend. 1067 miles in 21 hours, about 16 hours of riding. We traveled around Lake Michigan, same trip but different route I did with a group of guys in 6 days, a more relaxed pace then. My cousin rode with me on his R1200RT. The C650GT did great, only wish the gas tank was about 2x as big, had to plan for stops about every 150 miles. And for some reason gas mileage seemed to be down, possibly due to some windy conditions and consistent higher speeds on highway.

Welcome to the world of Iron Butt riding.....You freakin' maniac! I belong to the same gang and find long distance riding in a "gonna get there today(!)" mode to be a hoot. Love leaving NE Ohio at 4am when it's cold and arriving that evening in Florida to warm temps and with all kinds of stuff to see along the way. But, yeah, it's kinda nuts.

    How comfortable was the CGT?

This ride was just to get in the “club” and tick one off on the bucket list. Also a good way to prove the C650GT is a very capable bike. I think we would only do it in the future with a destination in mind and wanna get there ASAP like you were doing. Riding through the night and no sleep for 24 hours was a bit crazy, but with our plan I don’t think we ever really got tired that we felt like we needed to stop. Some areas around Chicago were so lit up on Interstate it was not even like riding at night.

The GT was perfect for a long trip. Definitely needed the throttle lock but the ability to put feet in so many places and move around is great. With windscreen up you are in a little bubble of calm air. Only issue is small fuel tank doesn’t give you the range but is forced you to take a short break every 2 hours or so. Not sure what was going on, maybe some brisk winds mixed with 75-80MPH speeds but I saw gas mileage drop down to as low as 35MPG and only averaged 39MPG for trip. Today after commuting to work all week I was averaging 48MPG.
