Oil drain plug washer, & belt wear

    Hi, all,

Recently joined the C650 world, and about to embark on my first DIY service. Bike has done just over 10,000 miles, and the last service was 14 months and 2000 miles ago.

So far I've got 2 questions (although I'm sure there will be more

    1. When changing the oil, I see no mention of replacing a drain plug washer - I've had to do this on most bikes. Is there a washer, and does it need replacing?

    2. People on the forum seem to talk about not replacing the drive belt until perhaps 15,000 miles - but checking it for wear at 12,000. How do I check it for wear?

    Thanks in advance

    Mike

There's a good tutorial on how to do the oil change, and it mentions the part number for the crush washer (yes, there is one). See elsewhere on the forum for the topic on how to do the oil change.
You will want to reset the service reminder on the dash. There are now several options, including the GS-911 and the Motoscan app. There may be others I am not aware of. The oil change is simple, just be patient in taking the readings on how much oil to add, it takes quite a while after running the engine for the level to 'settle'.

Don't know about the drive belt, other than (1) people do seem comfortable about not replacing until much later than 12,000 miles, and (2) it seems a no-brainer to get the OEM replacement from Mitsuboshi (dealer in Italy) for less than $100 rather than the BMW version for which they want, here in California, $435 including sales tax. Checking its condition likely involves closely measuring width and thickness and comparing to new specs. And maybe visually checking for cracks in the material.

Thanks for this. I'll take a look at the tutorial. I did get the Motoscan app, and successfully reset my service light - I should probably post something about that.

I'm based in the UK, so I'll probably get the belt from Italy. In the absence of any published specs on width & thickness, I guess it'll come down to a bit of old fashioned engineering judgement - or waiting until the bike misbehaves!
