Timing Chain Tensioner Recall

I think to qualify for lemon law a vehicle had to have the same issue repaired 3 times or something like that. To prove it's unrepairable. The recall should sort everything out, in time and part availablity.

So I am here in Canada and called my dealer yesterday and talked to them and he would get back to me today and so happens I dropped by today and still they have not even heard of the recall. They are now looking into it (I am sure they are not in any rush).
 
So-called "lemon laws" are state laws that provide a remedy for purchasers of cars and other consumer goods in order to compensate for products that repeatedly fail to meet standards of quality and performance. Each state likely varies in definition and remedy. The federal lemon law, the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act, protects citizens of all states. Under that Act a warranty should allow for adequate repairs in at least two, and possibly three, attempts to correct a particular defect.
 
I was going to my local dealer here in sunny Victoria, BC on Saturday and just as I started on my scoot from home I hear this awful grinding noise every time I pull away from a stop! Got to the dealer and they have not heard anything about a recall yet... Not sure what is wrong with my bike but will let you all know later in the week. It has only 7,000 km and the guy at the dealer was talking about having to maybe replace the belt etc... Will see what they come up with!
 
Wow, 60 days until a remedy was delivered. Guess I'll be patient.

Some of the clutch side seal parts shipped, the rest of the seal kit is still on order. But that's some progress I suppose. I just hope I can get it fixed without the motor eating itself. But until the recall hits us stateside, it's not on the menu for me until these other solutions have been tried.

Is there a warranty on the bike? :)

You are a scooter expert...As you know this is the top of the line. It will get fixed to your satisfaction. Don't use this as an excuse to ride the Vespa! :D

Had my 650 in for 600 mile service last weekend. Asked about the recall and they had never heard about it. That was at Gateway BMW in St. Louis, MO. Not hearing or feeling any issues so I was OK with that for now.
 
Recall is in Germany and Canada as far as I know. My shop has not heard of it either even considering it's in the shop to diagnose "a strange clanky noise" on the timing side of the motor. My advice is to be aware of any noises and shut her down if it gets too pronounced. I would let oil pressures drop, then restart and hope the hydraulic tensioner resets.

Good advice in any case, but the 'Technical Features' document says about the cam chain " The chain
is routed around the sprockets, using a guide and tensioner rail as well as a spring-loaded cam chain tensioner to ensure zero play."

I am hoping that the recall is released soon, that way I can take care of the 6000 mile service, the luggage rack recall, the sidestand switch recall, and the tensioner recall all at the same time. In the meantime I'm just keeping an ear out for strange noises.
 
Still in Canada the dealer I have been in have not heard about the timing chain tensioner recall, it has now been a recall here of about one week. Also when the tensioner gets replaced, what about the chain would it have not stretched due to the chain being thrown around.

I also asked about the side stand switch recall and he told me all that is needed is that they seal the switch so water cannot enter. Can anyone verify this and not the entire switch being replaced.

Just for fun, I looked up the procedure to change the Cam Chain Tensioner (or CCT hereinafter). The good news is that the CCT is accessible externally - once the right side panels and footrests are removed it can be unbolted without having to disassemble the engine further.

The other news is that it required a pretensioner tool (Timing-chain tensioner for removal/installation of camshafts - Order No. 83 30 2 297 983).

I looked up this number on the BMW parts website - while I could not find a list of models that this tool is applicable for - I am assuming that it is not a 'scooter only' tool. But you might want to verify that your dealer has this tool before you drop the scooter off to have the work done in order to avoid unnecessary delays.

As always, this is FYI only.
 
It is a scooter only tool to remove cams but shouldnt be a problem without as long as you are carefull and undo each nut a turn at a time and lift evenly.
