Battery tender

I have a battery tender that I was going to plug it into the 12V accessory port in the left side storage compartment. The owners manual wasn't clear to me if that is how to keep the battery charged. The owner's manual said not to use the 12V port to charge a dead battery. My battery is not dead so I assume I can use the 12V port to trickle charge the battery? I could take off the right side panel and charge it directly to the battery? What do you say?

The battery tender will not blow the fuse on that plug. That is the reason they tell you not to charge the battery through that outlet; the fuse will blow if you run too much voltage. You should be fine.

I had a BMW accessory socket installed outside of the glove box so I can run my electric vest. I use that outlet for the battery tender, but you shouldn't have an issue with the one in the glove box.

I use a tender all the time my bike is inside. Got the pigtail and wired directly to the battery, receptacle comes out above right front panel aft of mirror. This bypasses the can-bus system and goes direct to the battery.

The electrical schematic appears to indicate the 12V outlet is wired direct from the positive side of the battery to ground, I would not think a trickle charge through the outlet would harm anything.

What schematic? Where did you find this?

Thanks for the info. I will put a float charger through the receptacle until my next service in the spring when I will install or have the dealer install a pigtail.

the power sockets on our scoots will charge through to the battery, the can-bus does'nt shut them down. you have the standard cigarette lighter point in the L/H glove box. wiring and a blank for a BMW socket in the underseat bucket amd a sat-nav point under the handlebar plastic, only the last one will swich off via can-bus.

Personally, I think I'd rather have the BMW accessory socket. You can use that for MULTIPLE purposes, not just charging the bike when you're not riding it. The BMW accessory plug has become so ubiquitous that nearly every manufacturer of heated clothing will have the necessary plug available in their catalog. Deltran makes the BMW plug available as an option for their Battery Tender chargers as well. A company called "Powerlet" uses the BMW (also known as a "John Deere" plug) plug as standard equipment on all of their heated clothing. Just a thought.

takes only minutes to fit the socket under the seat, GT takes a little longer but the Sport no time at all. as already stated, the wiring amd plug are already there on the loom, i charge through this with no problems at all.

I prefer to use SAE connectors as they are more compact and less expensive than the BMW or Marine type (cigarette lighter) connectors. I ran a fused , switched, 12 Gauge wire run to the handle bars directly from the battery. There I have a lighted switch, fused, junction box to power the GPS, radio, heated gear, or anything else needing power such as air pump, work light, etc., and there is a pigtail for the Battery Tender.

Lots of places sell them , of course you can find them in auto parts stores.

My socket is on the handlebar. The dealer ran a fused relay directly to the battery so like the socket in the glovebox, it's always "on." More convenient for my heated gear to have the socket there than under the seat.

Right..."Just a thought" based upon your 900 years of motorcycle touring experience. :)
