BMW oil

I went to the dealer a few days ago to get some oil. When I got there I was pleasantly surprised to find the cost had come down significantly but I also noticed the container is no longer silver it is blue. I asked if there was a change and neither of the guys at the counter new. All the codes on the back were the almost the same but one says api sj and the other says api sm so I went home with some oil to do a change. The old oil (silver container) has a red color to it and the new oil is the normal honey color. I called the dealer to ask about mixing the two and he said I should be fine

What about it girls and boys any opinion?

I was thinking should I use 3 litres of the new oil and 100ml of the old oil or using all the old oil with 2.1 litres of new oil just to get rid of it

The oil is OK to mix in any form. The old is a SJ the new is a SM which exceeds the spec for SJ.
BMW and Castrol had a parting of the contract to mfg BMW oils and now you are getting oil mfg by Shell, all are made to BMW specifications so nothing has changed.
My 2012 says use 15W-50. I have always used Amsoil 10W-40 100% synthitic. It dissipates heat at a much greater rate than mineral oil so I should not have any seal problems. Oil overtemp comes on at 302F, my oil will stay in grade to 450F at that temp I will have melted hosed and burned up electrical wiring, something will be on fire. Mineral will go out of grade at around 320F.
