brand new C400X - stalls

the engine is totally controlled digitally and the dealer cannot raise or alter anything. there has to be an update to the engine ECM. This is BMW's totally digitally controlled engine.. the 650 doesn't even have this.

I had the same stalling problem with my C400GT. A firmware upgrade resolved this problem. Your Motorrad dealer should know about this.

What is your firmware ? Mine was updated last week 021-004-040 i know the latest one is close to this version. They seem to vary depending on location.
yet to see if mine stalls after the update. So far all seems the same (i was on 001 version)

Yeah Donnus, that's the same version I have in my C400GT (021_004_040). Been updated over two months and not a single stall yet.

i bought my C400X end of July and since now no stalling problems. after the first 1000 klm oil change and did some control to throttle due to a recall (i had no idea). how do you check the update version?

I have to report that since the last software update it seems to be smoother and does not stall.
However the fact remains that this scooter is not the quality That it should be.
I still have grinding noises from the transmission, creaky plastics, average weather protection, harsh ride, no storage space.
Coming from a Honda Forza I am used to better quality at a lower price.... I don’t think I would buy this scooter again.

it is a true that some plastics creaking. i was told from my mechanic to wait some time (5000 klm?)
and then he will apply to the joints "something" which i dont know what is.
i ride the bike almost one month now and i am going to mention only the negative points

Yes, we need not to accept inferior quality and engineering considering the band name and the price paid !
guarantee work, the more BMW will respond to fix things and engineer Proper fixes.
Totaly unaceptable that a Yamaha and Honda scooters are miles ahead for less price... even on the engineering front !

before making this purchase , i searched a lot for both Honda forza and xmax 300 and 400. prices quoted to me: for the honda 6450 euros including the top case. xmax 300 , 6300euros , xmax400 for 7100. all scooters without plate and road tax. and i gave for the bmw 6700 euro key handed!!
(only with the led head lamp as extra). no connectivity and the the rest options.
for me it was the best deal for C400X i could get in the market!
anyway, since now i say i am quite happy

after having the latest software update and having 7400km on the clock, i thought the stalling issue was a thing of the past.
WRONG !
After doing about 15 mins at a constant 80km/hr, then approaching a traffic circle, letting gas off, slowing to about 30Km/hr then applying gas... IT STALLS !!!!
in the middle of the traffic circle. I got almost bumped by a car behind. I had to pull to the middle of the circle brakes on and restarting.. the cars hooting.
EXTREEMLY DANGEROUS !!!!

think I might have got somewhere with mine at last - took it in for a service and for the two (!) outstanding product recalls (throttle cable and brake calipers) and I noticed that on my Vehicle Health Check that there was an item under Engine saying 'requires replacement airbox and software update for cutting out issue'.

I asked the dealer about this - it seems that there is a problem with the standard airbox, there's an actuator thingy that fills a hole when the engine is at idle, but the hole is oval and not quite the right shape for the actuator, so it lets in air and the engine runs too lean and stalls. Needs a new airbox and a software update to match.

They replaced the airbox for me for free, which suggests to me that this is a product recall in the making.

Only had the one commute there and back with it so far, but I tried drifting to a halt at every lights and couldn't get it to stall - hopefully it's fixed

Great news ! Mine has the latest software and keeps on cutting out.
can you please give us more technical details ?
eg: part number ? technical bulletin ?
i know already without a better description my service center will laugh it off.
thank you for this update, it could help us immensely.... 👍

that's all I know I'm afraid. My service was done in the London UK service centre (they call it Park Lane, but it's actually in Stewart's Road, Battersea, +44-0370 700 5202 ).

I'd suggest that you give them a call if your local centre can't help - a guy called Tony helped me. The fact that they identified it without prompting and did it for free for me suggests to me that BMW know about this now and a recall is probably coming.

Check earlier threads regarding stalling on650gts. Another rider had two vacuum lines going to an idle sensor replaced. Turns out it was the same problem on my 3013 GT. Two small hoses were $26.00. Hadtowait for them to come from Germany. Hoses were cheap but labor to get to them was not.

I just brought my c 400 gt 4 weeks ago to the BMW dealer for the stalling issue (and the 2 recalls).
They kept the scooter 3 weeks and liaised with BMW for the stalling issue (very random and not repeatable)
BMW technical dept had no answer... so they changed the idle motor and updated the software (was a small incremental update).
I rode the scooter, all seems as before. No stalling yet, but it was very random anyway. The idle is still as before, with the engine hunting from 1300 - 1500 rpm. Nothing changed there.
they assured me that they checked the air lines as well... nowadays an engine that cannot idle in a stable manner is a disappointment in itself.

Update: got my scooter back 2 days ago.
BMW changed : Temp sensor, thermostat, throttle body and fuel pump.
Result: the engine still does not warm up (although now it reaches 66C instead of 56C). the idling is slightly better but still erratic. (BTW I have the latest software). Seems like BMW is in the dark about solutions for this issue.

Mine stalled as well. Had the airbag mod, new software, no different. Finally they changed the whole clutch assembly. Noticeable difference, you can feel it disengage when slowing... disengages at approx 15kph. Still idles like it has a vacuum leak though. Finally getting the new updated motor mounts installed on 27th this month. Hopefully that removes the vibes!
