Can It Go On The Freeway?

For more than a year I've been nice to other bike owners asking about the GT. It always seems like the conversation is missing critical information and I have to prove it is more than moped.

A conversation I had last night is motivating me to try something else. I was standing with a friend - a Harley owner - looking at my GT and talking about it. He asked how fast it went and I said over 100mph. Then we went on with other comments about the ride, etc. Then he asks: "Can it go on the freeway?" I felt a little surprised and a little irritated. I mean, where does this come from? It is not a small looking bike, especially with the rear box. And I just told him it is plenty fast enough And he asks this???

Honestly - I'd say this is how 95% of the conversations go with bike owners.

So I'm going to try positioning the bike differently to see how it goes. For Harley owners I'm going to try: "Yah, it's very interesting. It's BMW's new Harley killer - a faster and more comfortable touring bike than a Harley; and the funny thing is they did it with only a CVT. Isn't that amazing?"

This will drive more interesting conversations for sure. But you can bet I won't do it in a crowd of Harley owners because I want to make it home as well.

Well, some folks ask funny questions when just trying to make conversation. A lot of Harley guys are "cruise to Starbucks" and that's about it because it is very much a social club. They may not really know much about other bikes. Nothing wrong with that but a few buy into the Harley or nothing mindset. Don't let it get to you. The CGT speaks for itself. Full disclosure: I am a HOG and a BMW MOA member.

In some states there are signs at highway entrances "prohibiting; horses, bicycles , and motor scooters. Maybe the questions come from that.

Then again, as a Harley owner, he may be either unaware of the speed requirements for the freeway, as all he ever does is putt,braaaap/fart his way from bar to bar, or the math of equating 100 mph with freeway speeds is too challenging...

Just tell him to put his helmet on, apparently he is getting too many June bugs to the head. Oh wait, you will have to tell him what a helmet is.

My dad brought home an 883 one day. So, when out for a visit, I took it out for a few hours. That bike did not like going on the freeway. Anything over 60mph and I thought my fillings were being shaken loose. So, maybe some HD owners might not appreciate a smooth running 650 that can run at fast highway speeds for hours at a time.

I'm just playing here but it is funny the ad for the 2016 883 states: "The Sportster Iron 883 is ready to brawl in the streets."

Perhaps they are referring to the interaction of the bike and rider? :p

With: 58.3 ft lbs @ 3750 rpm = 41.63 hp it will take some convincing to go fast.

I prefer not to brawl with my bike.

Is HD finally publishing hp specs? I know for the longest time they're advertising sheets focused on fashion and history.
