Help with Chain Tensio Check

I'm trying to check the tension on my final drive chain (not the chain in the engine; the one that goes to the rear wheel). I took off the observation plate to check the slack. When I put a screwdriver on the side of the chain under one of the rivets and push up the slack looks fine. And that makes sense; the scooter has about 8,000 miles (I bought it used). But I can get a lot more leverage if I put the screwdriver blade under the chain and push it up that way. If I do that, it looks like the slack is beyond the service limit.

So my question is which way is the correct way to check the slack?

Excellent question and I'd be curious to hear the answer. I recently replaced the chain rail, moving from a level 1 to a level 2 (you can go all the way to level 4). It's a pretty quick job and should extend the life of the final drive.
