Malossi and Dr. Pulley swap

Malossi and Dr Pulley - My Photo Gallery

Hi all,
As mentioned before, I waited quite a bit for the clutch and malossi variator to arrive and for the end of summer to install. As I had to go to San Antonio for
2 weeks I left a camera and the bike int he hands of 2Wheel Dynoworks (Nels and Tyler) to change and dyno the results. Above are some pics and later will be
the dyno runs as well.

As you can see in the photos and from others already posted, the plastic, brackets and covers all came off fairly easy. Not shown is the
black mesh filter over the suction center for cooling air; It was quite dirty and I think I will clean it after any long journey, most of the dirt and grasses looked
to be from my trip over the cascades and thru the farmlands of eastern washington.

I purchased the locking wrench from BMW for $35, I thought it might save any accidental damage due to incorrectly trying to hold/remove the bolts.

Everything came off quickly, except for the Clutch retaining nut. it is a 60mm. Rather than building a contracption to compress the spring and loosen it,
Puget Sound BMW tech were happy to swap it out with the factory compressor and socket, they charged 1/2 hour to do it.

They reinstalled the clutch side and when installing the variator; started with the 20oz weights (racing setup) 52.26hp 39Tq. the movment didn't start
until 4500 rpm and stayed strong, it was definatly as promised.....race only recommendation. at one point a second person had to sit on the bike and push
down to keep it from so much wheel spin....

the next dyno setup was the 20/24gr mix, which we kept. HP 50.23/ TQ 39.71, this time it engauged at a nicer 3500 rpm and still had a more aggressive
take off. where you may notice that the 20/24 hp is similar and the Torque is down @2.5FtLbs. it starts at 35Ft lbs and not 24Ftlbs and a lower RPM.

It should also be noted that the top speed went from 109mph to 120mph after the malossi swap.

the short ride I have done so far has been impressive to me. the seat of my pants registers more power applied to the ground. In talking to nels about this,
we believe we cannot get a good representation of the torque compared to a geared bike as the geared bike is tested in one gear, where we are infinitly
varying the ration and hiding some torque in the curve. The only thing I can do is compare this to the Burgman 650 42hp stock and 45 tuned/pipe etc...

In the graph: blue is Dynos before Malossi and Dr. Pulley
Red is 20oz weights
Green, 20/24 wieght mix

Finally, for the Dr. Pulley, all I can say is that there is a much more firm connection and disconnection. at 25mph when slowing down it really disconnects.
my stock one didn't disconnect that quickly. there is also no shuddering when it engauges. I will have to look at this more later but it also feels much better
than before.

the setup on the clutch is just as Dr. Pulley sent it; clutch 27Kg and Pillow 16Kg.

I will post more as I ride and evaluate.James Tyler.jpg

Thank you for all of the information!

Does the bike have enough HP to actually reach 120mph on a road?
The 3500rpm engagement is about 1500 higher than stock?

In Seattle I haven't had the chance to get her up that high, but have been up to 117 by GPS so far....close enough? he he.
Actually I wish I had ridden here out to Eastern washington, out here for the week on business, the weather is great! but I wanted to test the
new bmw X1 m sport I just got.
The RPM isn't really that much louder than before, difference from the stock 1500 is that it doesn't slip until you reach some speed. it fairly launchs. if you go slow it's
good, but, if you go 3/4 throttle and then full, you launch really nice.

I just bought the chest piece for my EGO (like Hero) 1080p action cam. I think now when I ride it will be better to see where I am going as well as gauges. I bought the EGO
for $175 instead of the 200+++ for the Hero systems. best part is it has WIFI so you connect to your phone to check like a viewfinder then start recording remotly.

I hope to do some videos to give an idea of the launch and speed....

whoa 117mph is impressive.... does the gearing change with all that stuff you installed to allow a higher top speed?

I saw the Malossi Variator and Dr. Pulley clutch at scooterpartsco.com, and was thinking about pulling the trigger. It's good to see that it really does put more power to the ground. I don't know if I should go with the Dr. Pulley clutch or wait to see if Malossi comes out with a Delta Clutch for the BMW. Did you use the Malossi belt or the stock belt?

I am using the stock belt, I plan to inspect in spring and end of summer for wear condition.
the one thing I like about the Dr. Pulley is that it locks up at a point and there is no slipping after the secondaries kick out.
