Thanks. I know what happened ... I turned the "out of range" message off, since that was part of my new normal using the spare/emergency key. The message always comes on when you start the CE 04 with that key, and I "X" out of it. Who wants to look at that while you ride? Normally, with a fob...

Yes, I understand that. My question was, does the out of range screen stay on? It clearly did not on my bike, since it's five miles from golf course to home and there is no way I would have missed it.

Glad you had a happier ending. Interesting that you got a "Key not in range" message. I did not. Maybe I missed it but it's hard to ignore that big popup box that dominates the screen -- and I believe it stays on until you turn the bike off? Can you verify that? Hopefully I won't need to find...

The low screen, all four or so inches of it, is a joke. The BMW "tall" screen is not much better. My bike came with those two screens plus a Wunderlich and a GIVI installed, which was TOO high, as I had to look through plastic all the time. The Wunderlich with a small screen extender is ideal...

BMW-only maps is not a customer-friendly feature. I gave up trying to make it work and put on a RAM base plate and cell phone holder, like I always had. Even that wasn't easy because the CE 04 brake reservoir covers are curved, not flat. Took a bit of fiddling but a slightly longer bolt worked...

I saw two references to this happening on the Facebook CE 04 page -- terminal connections for the 12V battery came loose over time and killed the battery. Apparently you can't start the bike, or even use electronic functions like unlocking the glove box or steering lock, without a live 12V...

That's a pretty short life span for a 12V battery. Where is the 12V battery located on the bike?

That would be scientific. But I can't believe BMW Motorrad would produce a world-class machine with the odometer fifteen miles off. My theory is the previous owner, who was responsible for 4,900 of the 5,708 miles on the bike, skewed the computer results with his driving habits. He rode 11...
