FWIW my Honda SH 300i scooter runs more efficiently on the mid-grade. I was always putting in premium as in 'can't hurt' but after reading the relevant forum comments decided to try it out and, for sure, it got better MPG than with the premium fuel.

The only thing that comes to mind are the idle air actuator hoses - two small long-ish vacuum/air hoses that can crack as they age introducing unexpected air into the system, throwing off the ECU.

I swear by the original BMW stuff for two reasons: - it is definitely unquestionably correct to use - it is barely any more expensive than any other name brand motorcyle specific oil. You do want motorcycle engine specific oil, not car engine oil.

Could be one of the starting inhibitor/safety switches with an intermittent fault. I know you say sidestand is up and brake lever is applied, but if one of those switches is on its way out, the bike won't start when it is acting up, and will start when it's good again.

Sorry this happened. The kill switch on both my BMW bikes (C650 and K1600) are quite 'heavy' to operate, likely to prevent precisely what happened to you: accidental engagement. Is the one one the 400 so easy to press?
