BMW Motorrad mobile app Make Life a Ride

I’m hoping to find out whether other BMW CE 04 owners have experienced the same problems before I make a formal complaint to BMW.

I bought a new BMW CE 04 in January 2026, and one of the features that helped sell the scooter to me was the integrated navigation using the BMW Motorrad Connected app (“Make Life a Ride”). Unfortunately, my experience with the app has been extremely frustrating, and I’m now at the point where the navigation is almost unusable.

I have managed to change a few settings that allow me to navigate to recent destinations directly from the scooter, which has helped slightly. However, there is still one major problem with entering a new destination in the app.

When I go to the map screen and start entering a new destination in the address/search bar, the app immediately starts searching while I am still typing. It then appears to become overwhelmed by the search and effectively freezes.

If, with some luck, the correct destination appears in the search results, selecting it can take several minutes. I tap the address and seemingly nothing happens while I wait for the app to catch up. Sometimes it eventually responds; other times the app is effectively unusable.

Has anyone else with a CE 04 experienced this?

I even bought a new mobile phone dedicated solely to the CE 04/BMW app. It made absolutely no difference, so this does not appear to be a performance issue caused by my original phone or other applications running in the background.

If this is affecting other owners as well, I intend to raise it formally with BMW. It would therefore be useful to know whether this is an isolated problem or a more widespread issue with the app.

Thanks in advance for any experiences, suggestions or solutions.

@MWicked :

1) I have a '23 C 400 GT (and before that, a '22 C 400 GT), not a CE-04, but I've been reading the forum for three years now and don't recall reading any posts in which much love has been expressed for BMW's app.

As you note, the interface leaves much to be desired. Also, the security and location requirements seems overly intrusive, as I recall.

2) Lots of luck emailing (NA or Germany) or calling (NA) BMW.

I've done that myself a few times, on a couple of different issues, and mostly they either ignore you, or say something along of the lines of duly noted (and do nothing), or say that's a dealer issue, or otherwise kick the can down the road.

3) If you want a full-featured system, in my opinion you're better off buying a sophisticated unit from the top CarPlay/Android players such as Chigee (e.g., https://www.chigee.com/collections/bmw-solutions) or Carpuride (e.g., https://carpuride.com/collections/bs-motorcycle-series).

Me, I hardly ever care about knowing where I am or where I'm going, but for those occasions that I do care I have a Peak Design phone mount (with vibration damper) on my C 400 GT (see https://billanddot.com/C400GT/#S-183 in my gallery, along with a few pics and captions before and after) on my C 400 GT. On my other current bike, a Royal Enfield Meteor 350, I have a pretty inexpensive Aoocci CarPlay unit permanently mounted (mostly because I like its TPMS sensors and readout).

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer here, and maybe someone who actually uses the BMW app will chime in with some useful suggestions.

For the navigation part, I 100% agree. It works kinda, but it's not very intuitive nor very good.
Which is why I've bought a 7" smart display I've mounted on the handlebar cover that runs Android Auto from my phone. Much better navigation.

The app is terrible. We're what is called a captive audience: we can't shop around for a better app so we have to endure whatever rotten experience they conjur up. We can only do dramatic things like get a completely different platform, one which doesn't interface at all with the hardware we've already paid for. Or sell our BMWs and move on to a company that properly resources their app development team.

Is the app terrible? Yes. Has it utterly tarnished my opinion of BMW, one built over decades of owning BMWs? Yes. Will I mention this to anyone interested in a CE 04, or other BMW moto? Absolutely.

Good luck, I hope you can get someone to listen to you. The bar is extremely low for a serviceable app, so we're not asking the moon.

(FWIW, I've written my own map app for other outdoor activities. It's ridiculously easy, and they have 0 excuses for such a piss-poor product.)

Thanks for responding and good to know it's not just me. I loved my CE04 but now the left rear indicator has broken off which is another intentional design fault which they have made it deliberately easy to break, if I knew these problems before I would have shopped around....

We have a saying in the UK, "Fuck'em!" So I have sent the email and copied your responses anonymously of course, even as you have mentionned they do nothing these problems will make me think twice, next time I make a big purchase. If the German manufacturers are worried about the threats from new manufacturing countries like China and India, then they need to do more than just sack employees like VW has just done.

Rant over, have a nice ride!

Honestly, I see the navigation thingie as an add-on, that would be nice to have working better, but not a deal-breaker in any case. The bike is nice, nothing really to complain about.
And just about no motorcycle you can buy has a built-in navigation, even if that's something people would expect nowadays.
