Charging amps limit keeps defaulting to 6 amps

Good morning all:

My CE04 has been off the road due to a repeated red screen. It appears that it was a defective 12 volt battery. I am finally back up and running and able to ride. However, I noticed that the charging limit was set at 6 amps and since I have a home Chargepoint, I changed this to a higher limit. Having done this, the next time I needed to plug in i noticed it was back down to 6 amps. During the process of the fault diagnosis which eventually determined the 12 volt battery issue, my vehicle has multiple software updates.

I wonder if anyone else has had a software update and is now finding that the charging limit is now, by default, 6 amps. I can change it, of course, but it is somewhat tiresome to have to do this every time I want to plug in at home, or use a public charger and have it immediately default back to 6 amps each time.

I am sure it is not something I am doing and i can see it charging at the selected limit I have set, and I am not altering this between charges.

Good morning I have the same problem, it's the system update that the dealer did, last summer I've got the latest update and since then the OS is really weird for the charging and keeping in memory a few stat anyway the response of BMW was there will be a upgrade this spring that should fix all the problems until then hang tide and keep riding. Hope this will help you

Thank you! That is very helpful. I’ll no doubt get my update in October, when I take it in for service (unless I have any other issues in the meanwhile). At least I now know I that am not the only one with this issue!

Since it's a issues that BMW created when the fix is ready I would go it's free of charge, again depending how far is the dealer from your home.
Have a good week

Unless you're in a hurry, 6a is better on the battery than the fast charging. I just leave it there as I rarely fast charge it. My typical day on this bike consists of a 30 mile round trip to and from work. I just plug it in overnight and I'm good to go for the next commute. If I have to fast charge, I have a Tesla type 2 charger for my wife's car so I'll use that on occasion and bump the charging to 30, but as mentioned, for the most part, I just slow charge it.
Cheers

I am finding that I get range anxiety especially in the cold. I start the day with 62 miles and get home with 15. The cold weather does not help. My commute is only 35 miles or so, some country roads, some interstate and some 35/45 mph urban roads. It is the interstate that is zapping the battery.

Having a fully charged battery at the start of the day is what I usually have, but sometimes, on a day off, after running a few errands, the battery level goes down a fair bit and so I like to have it charged up in case I need to head on out somewhere. The charging locations are few around where I live, and there are many restricted ones. When I do need to charge at a public one, I would (and obviously can) select a higher amperage. At home, with my Chargepoint home charger, I can use 30 amps. I need not have spent the money on that if I was going to charge at 6 amps and just use the included one, I felt that having the option to charge faster at home would be a benefit (and of course, it is) but the changing of settings every time iOS a bit of a pain, that’s all.

I appreciate the advice about 6 amps being kinder to the battery in the long term and that is a useful thing to know. I’ll probably alternate depending upon my perceived needs for the day - 6 amps overnight and a higher rate on a day off if I think I need to head out somewhere and want it topped off.

So we have about the same commute (y). My commute to and from work also involves a bit of both backroads, city traffic and about 5 miles of interstate (70+ MPH). I agree with you, that the interstate travel on this bike is where the battery drops really fast, especially if I have it off of ECO mode. I have, on a few occasions, taken it on a long(ish) interstate ride (about 25 miles each way) and I've been ok by using not only ECO, but limiting my speed to no more than 65. Thats a good 50-55 interstate miles and still leaves me a bit of battery by the time I get home and I don't have to stop and charge it anywhere. Food for thought ;).

The power required to overcome air resistance is proportional to the cube of the velocity. So it takes 8 times as much power at twice the speed. Air resistance isn’t the only source of resistance of course but it’s the major one - and even more so at higher speeds of course.

My CE04 finally went back to BMW as it was a lemon. It kept cutting out and I had constant red screens appearing so I was finally fed up with it and got rid of it. That’s the bad news. The good news is I now have a 2025 model with an SOS button (which the other one did not have) and a touring screen. So far, I have travelled 100 miles. Fingers crossed that this one will not let me down. It will charge at whatever I set it at, and does not change. I have not looked yet to see what software version it has.

Sounds like a good outcome hopefully. What year was the SOS button added?

Not sure, but my old one was a ‘23 and the new one is a ‘25. This is a USA Market Model, by the way; the SOS button may have been introduced earlier for other markets.

Hello My understanding is that the SOS button is mandatory in Europe, maybe they standardize there production.
