Hi guys! New here and just bought a used 2016 BMW C650 GT 3 weeks ago. Just wondering if this is the normal cold start sound. I have attached a link for the videos. The link might expire in 2-4 days

Cold start:

And after going for a quick ride this is how it sounds:

I owned a scooter before but not a BMW and just 150cc so I’m new to this. Thank you!

Quite a difference in sound. If you still have the mechanical timing chain tensioner, it may be on its way out. My 2016 Sport sounded rattly from cold with only 2K miles on the clock, dealer replaced the tensioner under warranty at that point. The rattly noise would go away after the bike warmed up, so that's why I am speculating yours may have the same issue. I had to replace that second, dealer installed tensioner about 8K miles later - did that myself, the part is not that expensive, maybe $70-80 and I bought the BMW tool to hold the crankshaft while replacing the tensioner for maybe another $30.

Thanks for replying, yes I have read that there was a recall about the tensioner. I’ll take my bike to my local bmw dealer and hopefully it’s covered by warranty as well

Hello,

As already advised, check the chain tensioner first, it's the most important.

If the noise persists, look at the CVT (note that the transmission on these scooters has always been noisy).
The noise I'm hearing sounds like wear and tear on the sliders. Normally they're changed at the same time as the weight rollers.

It doesn't cost anything to dismantle and check, and you can take advantage of the opportunity to check the drive belt and clean the clutch!
