C400 GT TFT brace

As you may be aware there have been numerous cases of the TFT screens being stolen from BMW bikes and scooters. Cymarc Engineering Ltd based in Scunthorpe have developed a brace to prevent theft. Thieves just need to give it a good pull, without the need for tools, potentially leaving damaged wiring with a £1600 repair bill and a huge amount of stress and inconvenience. The company have made this brace for other BMW models including the 400X but have now included the 400GT. It's a testament to the companies skill and professionalism and their past experience that they managed to design and fabricate one for my 400GT as I waited, for which I am extremely grateful. The brace is a really firm fitting and totally secure which includes security bolts needing a special tool that even professionals would be unlikely to carry and casual opportunist thieves certainly not. It is available in powder coated satin black or brushed stainless steel. The brace is so good that in black looks OEM, personally I have the stainless which stands out and looks the part, making a statement. My TFT screen will certainly not be stolen.

I am shortly on a tour to the south of France and with visits to Paris, Marseilles etc this issue was a worry. In this country it would be a costly and inconvenient situation but at least you could get it sorted. Abroad, potentially thousands of miles from home it would be a disaster and certainly ruin the trip. The cost really is minimal compared to the cost to replace and is also a valued extra if you sell the vehicle.

Don’t get too excited. I had one and thieves took an angle grinder to it in Golden Square SoHo London in broad daylight and nicked the screen in a few minutes. That was my third nicked. Spent over £5100 on replacements. I am selling the bike back to BMW for a pittance.

BMW don’t care they are making a fortune on replacement screens. They didn’t even respond to my complaints and no offer of even a goodwill discount on the screens.

After my first TFT screen was stolen. I've learnt my lessons now. I never leave my bike unattended longer than 1 minute and if I do I always keep it visible to my eye so I can react quickly to deter any would be thieves.

I use my bike to commute to work and i cant do what you do. Anyhow what a stressful way to live having to watch your bike all the time. Im thinking of the new Yamaha XMax 300 Tech plus. Any thought anyone?

Someone should offer a solution where you just unplug and take with you this screen. If thieves can make away with it in minutes when it's mounted, it should not be that big a deal to make it removable? Like with car stereos removable fronts some years ago.

Or make the plastic fairing fit round the screen to make it very difficult to remove. I suggested that to BMW and they said it's only a problem in London. and refused. Think Im going to get a Yamaha Xmaxx

Interesting. I have both, a BMW C650GT (with the topbox) as well as a Yamaha Xmax 300. Like them both but for different riding. We have an RV and a Kendon (stand-up) trailer that we use to bring along one or the other scooter. If we are going for just a few days and will only stay within the confines of whatever park we are staying in, we take the Yamaha. Easier to load and unload. If we are going to be gone for a longer period, we take the larger bike so we can get groceries and have the needed storage. The 300cc is fine around parks but we tried it on one trip where we were about 10-12 miles outside of town and riding it just that distance on a highway with other cars, wind/rain and that tiny little shield convinced me we needed the bigger bike. It is fine up to about 65 or 70mph but surely not as smooth as the BMW and decidedly less power. So, all depends on what kind of riding you do I'd guess.

Good luck,
Keith (Texas)
