I bought the CE-02 three month ago, end of october 24 - highline pack dual batteries. Here are my first impressions and issues.

First off, i love the look. That's what made me pull the trigger despite the price, short range, charging time and limitations. I didn't even try it.

I don't ride much - about 2000 Km a year. Just errands and short hops into the city and neighborhood, but it's a joy each time i use it. The 55N.m torque is spectacular. According to the numbers its the equivalent of a 600cc. Something out of range for my 125cc license. I find myself making detours to climb a steep incline just for fun. It's like there is no incline!

That said i've had issues since day one and most remain to be solved.

My very first issue was with the passenger foot rests that can't be folded. I don't understand how they decided to ship this bike that way... It has been a real pain in... the ankles. Each time i had to use my feet those passenger foot rests where in the way. They painfully bited in my ankles and i became almost reluctant to use the bike because of them. I really resented them as a threat that could have resulted in a lose of balance. On top of it they where the second most salient parts after the handlebar, and in my back, so they could potentially be an issue when moving in between cars at the light for instance.

I removed them but now i can't have a passenger anymore. So i've been harrassing my dealer for 'real' foldable passenger foot rests... to no avail so far. I've noted the US version does have foldable ones. I hope they'll be able to provide them over here - in Europe.

The second issue was with the display that went black one day. The bike was working fine but with no display. I had to bring back the bike for service and they 'solved' the problem with a firmware update. That was mid november. Since then it's a mess.

- Almost every time i start the bike in the morning, i get the turtle warning, although the temperature is around 10C. The bike runs fine though. It goes away after a while and a new start.
- Energy harvesting is limited even in flash mode. The little rectangle on the left of the display does not go all the way as it used to and i do notice the difference. I had to change the way i approach turns and stops.
- I twice had unbalanced traction batteries at startup. Once after a charge, the other after several days without using the bike. That does affect traction a lot since it will run on the most charged battery until both are even. Recharging solves the issue - if you can wait.
- The display does not remember the previous setting. I like to have the charge percentage displayed, but after a stop it goes back to the 'pure ride' option.
- I sometime see a warning message regarding the remote battery. When i press the remote button it flashes green though.
- At startup i sometime see a message regarding the engine temperature. It's around 10C... !?

Overall no real big deal, and i hope those issues will all go away with the next update.

At last i've also noticed the batteries do lose some charge when at rest. So far it looks like about 2% a day.

Regarding mods, the only thing i did was to remove the rear shock absorber cover.

Did anyone experience similar issues? How do you deal with the passenger foot rests?
I'd be glad to hear from other riders.

Hi, I myself recently purchased a BMW CE02. I agree with a lot of what is said above, though I use the rear pegs and just ended up removing the front ones, don’t really take passengers. My issue has been starting the thing, recently it has decided not to start when the power button is depressed? I’ve just booked it in for its running in service, hopefully they can sort the issue. Other than that, the bikes a blast, seriously rapid off the mark, although I would say no to maybe more top speed, even if it was just to 70-80mph, it’s definitely got it in it to do it. For those new to one, you can charge the bike plugged directly in to the socket, or take the batteries out and charge individually, although it takes twice. For me average charge time is 2hrs 30mins. Here in the UK it’s been pretty cold of late, -3 some days, this bike does not like it that cold, I’ve even had it crawl along at 15mph when it’s been that cold, I’ve learned to try and keep it as warm as I can when I know it’s going to be so cold. Also if it’s below say 5c you will find it takes a while to get warmed up, you end up going through 3 stages of power as it does. This restricts its to 40pmh, 45mph and then finally full power. Overall it’s a really we built bike, looks good, everyone asks about it and it goes like a rocket.

Based on the BMW marketing material, the 02 stands for the equivalence of a 200cc (175cc), and the 04 stands for the equivalence of a 400cc (350cc)

Hi all, thanks for the welcome. Based on previous bikes I’ve had, the CE02 is a lot like the old Gilera Runner with the 172 Malossi race kit. That probably produced about 20-30bhp depending on set and extra bits like Polini Exaust etc. Although the Runner would wheelie the second you opened the throttle fully 😜 did make it more unpredictable. Rated bhp for the CE02 is 15bhp @5000 rpm, not sure if this is 100% accurate. Electric ⚡️ is very odd when it comes to bhp and nm, the Stark Varg has 80bhp with over 800nm torque yet is rated as a 125??? All I can say is the CE02 is as quick as anything from 0-60mph, zero gears and having to use a clutch helps but the instant torque is where it’s at, I’ve had loads of fun off the lights 😂

Woa!... that's worse then unbalanced batteries! Do you mean it's bricked and stranded?
Did you try to unplug all batteries, wait a bit and plug everything back, like you would do with a tv box or computer. That sometime does the trick...

No, it will turn off and on but it’s not first time, it did it for the first time 4 days ago and now it’s almost every time, tried everything, new batteries in the remote, even thought maybe it’s the small battery as it’s charged when using the bike. So went out on it and rode it until the traction batteries where nearly empty and still same issue, it’s obviously a communication issue with the keys, possibly the communication ring under the front of the seat. I’ll keep you posted.

It sounds like yet another bug in the firmware... unless something's wrong with the antena?
As i mentionned above, i often have a warning regarding the remote battery although it's green. That didn't happen before the firmware update i had three month ago. I hope you'll be luckier then me with what they'll load into your bike when it is serviced.

BTW: the 12V battery is supplied by the traction batteries. You don't need to ride to top it off.

On another matter, looking at your profile picture, i noticed your passenger handles are almost flat and wrapped around the frame at the back of the seat. That looks odd to me as i have some sort of horns protruding at the back to that effect. Did you mod anything?

Hopefully it’s a simple fix, like you say with a firmware update. Fingers crossed it’s a good one. I’m on the firmware in the pic attached currently. Yeah I was trying everything I could possibly think of before I contacted BMW, I purchased the bike second hand (although it only had 24miles on the clock) so I wasn’t sure how long it had been sat for not getting a charged. Also the person that bought the bike originally had a top box fitted which I hated, so I removed it. Haven’t put the passenger handles back as yet, not sure if I will, I’m undecided.

12.10.9.3 same as mine.
It's odd you don't experience any of the many bugs i mentioned.
Does your display remember the last setting?
Does the rectangle for regenerative braking extends all the way to the left in Flash mode?
Do you see the turtle some mornings when it's a bit cold?

Display is fine, the regen extends all the way if I remember right. I’ll check tomorrow and let you know. As for when it’s cold, Turtle is there from the off, eventually disappears when traction batteries are warmed up and it won’t regen until stage one of power generation. I find the bike is best straight from a charge.

Also I have just ordered these, hopefully they fit ok, I think they suit the bike better.

I wouldn't rely totally on the system that tops up the 12V battery from the traction battery. I've got a CE 04 which is supposed to look after its 12V too. However, last week my bike showed a traction system failure message when I switched it on. I turned off the bike but it wouldn't switch back on. I discovered that the 12V battery had drained too much. Plugging in an Optimate-4 CAN-bus charger to the DIN socket for a few minutes allowed the bike to switch on although I continued charging through the DIN socket until the 12V battery was fully charged, which took several hours. I had left the bike unused for about five days with the traction battery charged at about 75% and an outside temperature in the range of roughly 0 to 4˚C. I've had this CE 04 for almost three years and my normal usage pattern is to ride nearly every day and to never leave the traction battery charged at less than about 60%. I had expected never to have to deal with a flat 12V battery even when leaving the bike untethered to an electrical supply for long periods. I shall pay more attention to that 12V battery from now on - perhaps it's faulty but my confidence in the in-built 12V battery charging system is slightly shaken.

I think you may be on to something, I assume the 12v is for the lights and electrical system etc and the traction batteries are only used to power the motor. I might see how much a charger is and give that a go. I’m working for the next 4 days and I totally rely on the bike. So I definitely don’t want to get stuck. I’ll keep you posted 👍🏼

Just checked to see if the regen display goes all the way to left when we have full power. See pics below for stages

Certainly will. The first thing I thought when I seen the bike, such a futuristic looking machine, really concept in design but just plain mirrors fitted? Odd but hey, I’ll post pics when I’ve fitted them, should be next week 👍🏼
