Black flies. Questions for our Canadian friends !!

On my way back from Mount Rushmore , I was thinking of going North of the Great lakes. It will be around the second week of June. How bad will the black flies be??
 
I was going to say... I've been all over the Atlantic provinces and Quebec. The only place I ever ran into black flies was in Labrador. I'd been warned before I went, but I had no idea how BAD it was.
 
Ok, thanks, I will get back to you next June with on the spot reports. Maine and New Hampshire have black flies, I know from experience, they are spring bugs, and last for a few weeks. I live along the coast in Massachusetts, and we get annoying bugs all Summer; "midges" at dusk ( smaller then a black fly , but,just as hungry) and "greenheads" , a large biting fly with a iridescent green head that breeds in the salt marshes that will take a piece of flesh and can only be swatted with something heavier then a 32 oz ball peen hammer.

Ah yes, memories from my childhood in Weymouth. I remember those things from trips to Nantasket Beach. Didn't stop the fun, though.
 
We've always called those green-headed flies "horse flies" but they aren't. VERY common on the beaches here on Long Island. The closest I can come up with describing the bite of one of those bastards is having a burning cigarette ash land on your bare skin.
