I've had my C400GT for almost three years and 16,000 miles. In that time I've mostly been unable to brake hard using the front brakes because it seemed dangerous. Front braking causes an extreme vibration that seems to threaten to become a death wobble. BMW has replaced the front discs twice because they were out of spec, the last time being at around 11,500 miles, and it's since started to vibrate again. Not sure why they can't figure out what's causing this and when I was debating buying an extended warranty they said they wouldn't guarantee that the extended warranty would cover this basic safety issue. They also said there were no service bulletins. I'm not sure how to proceed other than to have my estate sue BMW if it actually tosses me. I've been riding big & little bikes since 1964 and I really do like this bike other than the braking issue.
Anybody else have this issue with a BMW C400GT?
1) No, I didn't have this issue on my '22 C 400 GT (had 5,000+ miles on it) and I don't have this issue on my '23 C 400 GT (have 6,000+ miles on it). And I brake pretty hard, on occasion (although typically squeezing both front and rear brakes), in some spirited riding.
And in two+ years of pretty faithful forum reading (and it's not as if the amount of posts here is overwhelming) I don't recall reading about such problems.
2) I would be surprised if this issue is not covered by BMW's extended warranty. As I understand it -- and I bought one for my former '22, and expect to buy one for my '23, before its three-year/36,000-mile warranty runs out -- everything that the initial warranty covers is covered by the extension.
(In case you were wondering, I had an engine problem on my '22, and after four months of the bike's being in the shop in the summer of '23, either corporate BMW or the dealership or a combination of the two eventually decided to replace the bike with a brand new '23.)
3) I haven't had any discs replaced, or anything like that done, and I've had the initial and 6K services done at my local BMW dealership (Max BMW, Troy, NY) on both scoots. I'm FAR from an expert on this sort of thing, but from reading forums over the years, I wonder:
- Have they loosened the fork pinch bolts, and bounced the forks, to get the front wheel in its comfortable position, and then re-tightened everything? Or, more generally, have they examined the forks for any quirks?
- Have they examined, and then possibly replaced, the brake pads?
- Have they examined the front rim, and checked it for balance and run-out?
- Have you been using the same tire brand all those miles? (I recently switched from Pirelli to Michelin, for example, but I haven't ridden since that switch in November.) More generally, have they checked the tires for proper balance, no manufacturing defects such as run-outs or other oddities?
That's all I got.
