Stock mirrors inadequate

I had hte Reevu in Singapore before, you hav eto remember to look the opposite way the see the sides (look right to see left) kind of funny at first. the first gen was a little heavy as well. if you look at buying one, see if you can get spare rear plexiglass covers, mine scratched up pretty quickly. I also see that they made the "periscope" you look thru is adjustable, it wasn't that way on the early models. if yo want any pics of mine let me know, I keep it as a souviner...he he
 
I'm wondering if a couple of those stick-on "Blind spot" mirrors most motorcycle shops seem to carry wouldn't be a less expensive solution? I'm thinking of getting a set and adhering them to that part of the mirror that shows my knuckles. Perfect spot, because it's not like they'd be blocking anything useful even if they don't work...

As many of you have probably found out, a small "blind spot mirror" does not work very well when mounted on the inboard part of the mirror (both on a car or a motorcycle). However, I found these small, adjustable, blind spot mirrors to work relatively well in that position. And as Jamie mentioned, they don't block any useful part of the bike mirror in that area.

The reason they work better than other spot mirrors is that the spot mirror base mounts on the bike mirror with the standard two sided tape, however, the spot mirror itself can be tilted out to give you a fairly good view of what would normally be your blind spot just behind and off to your side. No it doesn't eliminate the need to look over our shoulder before changing lanes, but I have found these small mirrors to be very beneficial in helping to see what is in that area.

They are less than $5 a pair but I have only been able to find them at Pep Boys Auto Parts stores (I assume they are a nationwide chain).

I got mine at Cycle Gear (a store opened up a couple of blocks away). I mounted them on the top edge, by the "point" of the mirror. Seems to be a good location to give me a clue as to what is directly behind me without having to yank in my elbows. The rest of the mirror lets me know what might be in the lanes adjacent to me or coming up from the sides. I just didn't like not knowing what was behind me as well.

Here is another way to add spot mirrors to a GT model.

This allows you to add a 3" spot mirror (instead of the smaller ones), and places them further out, which gives you much larger field of view. I rode the bike with both and the smaller spot mirrors and the larger mirrors, and the 3" mirrors are much nicer.

Any metal fabricator could easily duplicate these in less than 1/2 hr but it is always easier when you already have an idea what somebody else did.

(Note: I plan to paint the mounting plates black so they will blend in with the plastic mirror pedestals and give it a stock appearance, but I left them natural aluminum for the picture)

I used:

Metal: 1/16" thick aluminum (6061 alloy) for the mounts (the two mounting holes are drilled 11/64").

Mounting Screws: # 8 X 9/16", Low Profile Phillips Drive.

I carefully drilled two small pilot holes (7/64"), into the BMW plastic mirror stems, for the screws to secure the mounting plates. Even though the plastic is fairly thick in that area drill slowly and do not let the drill go very far in.

(Note: After I paint the spot mirror mounting plates I also plan to glue them to the GT's plastic mirror stems, but for now the two small screws are holding them quite securely)

The aluminum mounting plates are about 5-1/4" long (35mm), and 3-1/4" wide (82mm).

As you can see, they are very simple to make and it gives you a much larger, and safer, rear field of view. Moreover, once the mounts are painted black they should blend in with the stock mirrors and may even look like they came that way from BMW.

I bought the BUG Eye mirrors,although, haven't mounted them yet. I had a bicycle helmet mirror in the past which works the same and was always happy I had it. You can scan different area's when you get used to them. In the early Seventies a company sold helmet visors with mirrors built in. The actor Steve McQueen used the visor while dirt bike racing , do an internet search and there are pictures of him and the visor.

They may still work with an open face helmet (the kind almost everyone wore, including me, in Steve McQueen's days) but they won't work with the modern full face helmets and flip up face shields.

Check their web site, there is a picture of a full face helmet with the mirrors.
With a little imagination you could put them on most any helmet.
 
These guys out of Germany make Safer View aspherical mirror glass inserts for a BUNCH of German bikes. Maybe they'll be adding the C600/650? They make one already for the Tmaxes, 2008 and on.

I like the concept (my 2011 Ford Mustang came with similar type mirrors) but since only the outer half of my GT mirror is usable (the inner half is only good for looking at my arms & shoulders) I wonder if there would be any useful part of the mirror left to see what is behind us? Therefore, at least so far, it appears that the add on spot mirror is the best solution to help the poorly designed BMW GT mirror.

I am amazed how many motorcycles come with useless, or semi-useless, mirrors (Harley-Davidson being one of the worst!). I've been told that the manufacturers do it so we can ride between cars and not hit the car's mirrors, but if that is true then they should at least offer a wider factory accessory mirror to replace the semi-useless stock ones (even Harley does that). Oh well, I guess I will just keep the add-on spot mirrors and live with it. We shouldn't need to do that but at least it works.
 
Or, have something like the 2014 Suzuki Burgman... push a button and the mirrors fold out of the way for lane splitting. Get back into open traffic, and hit the button again to spread them back out where they belong.

That does have to be the neatest-sounding technology for a street motorcycle that I've heard of in a very long time.
 
Thanks. When you said Bug Eyes I thought you were talking about the design of the mirror not the name of the company. Interesting concept but they wouldn't work for me with my scooter helmet because they wouldn't allow it to be stored under the seat they way I like to keep it. However, I could see where they might work well on a snowmobile or some other type of off road machine.

I bought the aspheric mirror option to my c650gt.
Have the same problem as every one else and have broad shoulders wich forces me to often adjust upper body to see what is happening behind.

Well a couple of days ago I just for fun tried unorthodox to adjust the right mirror from like standard to point almost max inwards, well that just left a small part to actually see my right side but that small part makes up of the aspheric bit still giving me a good "grip" on what happening right side.
The good effect that this had is that I now see pretty good what happening close behind without moving my upper body all the time, like from nothing before to not to bad. I will have it like that for now.
