Hey all. Just got a 2023 with 408 miles. US model. Went to try charging to top off battery. Standard home charger 110V. Following the manual’s procedure the charge unit powers up blue after diagnostic sequence. Plug into bike and charging sequence starts (though 6A is the only available option). Charger light indicator starts flashing blue, and display screen shows “electron” flow and shows expected finish time. Screen auto powers down while charger still indicates flashing blue. With power off, hitting MENU button as manual suggests while charger flashing shows status as expected. But at 7:30 minutes, the charger light indicator stops flashing and goes solid blue. Appears then that the charging has stopped. Reconnecting restarts the process and charger again goes solid blue at 7:30 minutes. Multiple disconnects/reconnects/new outlets and it stops every time at 7:30.

What am I missing or doing incorrectly? Any all advice appreciated. Thanks.

You can adjust to 10A or higher.

and 6A was the only available option.
That sounds strange, AFAIK all US models have the quick charger. Send us a screenshot, will you?

Also, what exactly do you mean that charging stops at 7:30? Is that a time or minutes into the charge?

Thanks. Will grab a pic later this morning of the Charge Settings I can access.

7:30 meant at 7 minutes and 30 seconds the charging indicator light goes from flashing blue to solid blue. At that point hitting the MENU button to preview does nothing. I can't tell if it's still charging and in low energy mode or has stopped charging.

I'd say it has stopped charging.
As long as it's charging, hitting the menu button should show the charging screen, although that may only work if the key is in the vicinity.
Once charging has completed, the menu button does nothing.

Maybe a defective charger and/or a loose wire? The charger communicates with the bike via PWM signals on the signal line, and if that's interrupted the charging stops for safety reasons.
Have you tried a different charger? Maybe a neighbor with a Level 2 in his garage or something?

Thanks Tron. Great insight. I’m going to retry today at a different wall outlet. I also was charging on the center stand vs the side stand, but not sure that would make a difference. What’s odd is the charger “check” on initial connection shows good and it starts charging. Only to stop at about 7 minutes 30 seconds.

Additional question. I’ve seen two different home charger styles (US). I have the first version with the large black box and heavy gray cable. But another used one I looked at had the smaller one with thinner yellow cable. Any real difference?

This is the screen I get if I want to change charge settings. 6A is the only available charge option. I have not tried a public fast charger in the wild. Not my home 110V.

What’s interesting is while it’s flashing blue (charging), the MENU button preview screen doesn’t display the estimated time to complete or have the “electron flow” animation. But it is charging.

Also, any idea why the “max miles” range below would indicate only 58mi for fully charged?

You see that yellow arrow? That indicates that there are more options available.
In that screen, try turning the clicky wheel, probably up.

Yes, that depends on your ride profile. If you're cruising the city, you might see 80 there. If (like me) you have a lot of highway/interstate, significantly less.
I haven't seen 60 there yet, either.

But FWIW, I also have the black charger box with the blue LED's.

Thanks. On initial charging attempts the "arrow" offered no other options. After trying a new outlet and revised set up process is did get the options to scroll up and down to adjust Amps. I set and 10A as a test and it worked well.

Thanks again Tron. Makes sense. I finally have the chance to ride locally so I'll see if that alters the max range. I asked on a CE04 Facebook page about what's the newest version of software. One person posted theirs that appears newer than mine. He commented that when updated the max range increased from the mid 50s to near 80. It's possible that could be from a reset with no driving info stored, and might again go down as that user adds more driving info. I've reached out to my dealer to confirm the latest software version for US-market bikes.

Mine's a 2023 that I got new a month ago, so it likely hasn't seen a software update, either. I can look up which version I have if you're interested. I'll have them do the upgrade when I bring it in for the 600mi service.
But I'm pretty sure that the range increase is not real but from the fact that the drive history has been deleted, so it starts out fresh.
From what I've heard you can get 80mi when going through the city with speeds of up to 45mph or so, but not if you have extended highway/interstate stretches like I do. Then it's more like 60mi.
But my commute is 23mi each way, so I usually arrive at work with like 60% charge (and I can charge at work, so no issues there).

There you go.
The BMW charger can only do 10A, for whatever reasons, and it has a pretty thick cable.
I bought a Lectron Level 1 EV Charger that does 15A with a much thinner cable, so that resides in the helmet compartment now in case I ever need to charge at a household outlet. And it works, my garage outlets have a 20A breaker, I've tested that once.
But I've set the CE04 to 14A to be on the safe side as not to overload a 15A outlet.
For home charging the 10A of the BMW charger is plenty for me, as long as it's back to full when I leave in the morning I'm fine.

Thanks Tron...great stuff. Appreciate your quick replies and knowledge. Yes please take a look at your software version. Will be interesting to compare.

Probably the same software as yours, since yours likely hasn't been to the service either (I would assume someone bought it in 2023, didn't like it, traded it in and it sat at the dealer until you bought it).
If you do take it to the 600mi service, I would recommend to have them do a brake fluid change. At least I will do that. That stuff is hygroscopic and deteriorates over time. It might still pass tests for moisture content, but I don't want that old stuff in my brake lines to prevent issues down the road.

I took it out today around the city. Interestingly the battery charge went down from 95% to 85% in a 7.1 mile trip. But the mileage range went up from 55 miles when I started to 60 miles when I finished. So definitely driving style and regen makes a difference.

Hear you on the brake fluid.
