Ear Plugs

So we have had a couple misc discussions about ear plugs, but let's get down to it!

Who uses what and what do you like or dislike? Mine, when I remember to use them, are the cheap shooting range foam things. I have thrown them away while riding when they did absolutely nothing!

What do you use?
 
I've tried a couple things. I have some custom silicone (flexible) in ear monitors for music. They work well but there is some low/mid rumble because of the bone connectivity so - it's not totally awesome.

What I am really liking are the Bose noise canceling ear buds. I have to be careful getting the helmet on and off but they are absolutely amazing at getting rid of all the sounds I don't like and allowing me to hear what I need to hear.
I'm using them with Sena S20's or sometimes just with nothing. Can't say enough good about how they also make music sound, phone calls, etc.
 
Hearos are what I've used in many different environments to great success. Available in many db attenuations and tailored for different activities.

I use the flesh-colored silicone ear plugs from Rite Aid. Tried a BUNCH of the foam ones; they didn't stay in well and HURT after a short time.:mad: I then tried what my WIFE does to sleep at night; used ONE silicone plug, torn in HALF, with the two halves put INTO each ear, not ACROSS it like the directions say.

Works GREAT, attenuates sound better than anything else I've used, and I can still converse on my SENA intercom.:cool: I also use them at work at loud receptions, parties, etc. being flesh-colored, people don't notice them!
 
Proper insertion is the key, hold them in until they expand. Do not rush this as some foam plugs expand slower then others. As they expand you should "hear" the loss of ambient noise. The military teaches to pull the ear upward with the opposite hand over the head, which opens the ear canal.

I punch holes in the yellow industrial plugs ( I can't remember who makes them) to use on my Koss earpuds.
 
I made the plunge on a custom fit job 2 years ago and have been very happy - product is Fit-Ear. I can't get their web site to respond right now, so I can't post a link, but they are easy to find. They also have a booth at many of the bigger motorcycle shows (for sure the Progressive show that tours throughout the winter months).

I bought the model with 2 speakers and it's fabulous. I block most of the external noise and can hear music just fine at about 1/3 volume on an iPod. Even at that level I can still hear external for emergency sirens, horns etc.

I've also found that wetting the plugs (either with water or saliva) before putting them in makes for a MUCH better fit. Before doing that I'd always lose one ear or the other but never have a problem now.

So, you recommend giving yourself a wet willy for maximum benefit?:D
 
Nah, none of that sissy stuff for me. I just turn down my hearing aids. Too many years flying and shooting before ear plugs became de rigueur. Use 'em guys!
