I understand the idea of bar ends and how they work and what they do. Surely though the folks I saw at a local bike shop looking new ones over would be just shooting in the dark as there is no way of knowing what weight will remove vibration. That's unless they are just buying the same weight they already have in a perty colour!! Am I missing something or is there typically a return policy if the weight is wrong?

They are usually replaced for looks. The proper weight is what dampens the vibration best. A vibration engineer might be able to calculate the weight, but, trial and error will work to.

In the sixties I had a Harley (1957 Hydra Glide, no rear suspension) that had a rubber mounted handle bar. You could move them forwards and backwards about 2 inches. If you were relaxed and didn't fight them it was fine and I imagine did reduce vibrations. If you fought them, it was scary and it would feel like you were getting whipped back and forth. It took a while to get used to them!
I think weights are better. Of course that whole bike shook like a washing machine on spin cycle!!
