Fuel gage is not reading right?

Maybe I just don't know how this gage works but judging from my last bike I think my BMW is giving a false reading.

I noticed the tank was just over mid level when I drove it off the lot. While on my way home with it I noticed the level dropped another increment. Next time I was out on it I topped off the tank but the gage did not read full. Here is a photo of the gage after toping it off and riding 6 miles home. Then to work and back last night for a two way trip at 12 miles totaling 18 to 20 miles since topping off the tank.

Does this look right?

If you leave the ignition on while you fuel up it will do that. Turn it off and back on again, see if that fixes it.
I'm used to leaving the ignition on from my old bike and noticed the same thing you did.

I am sure I left the key in the ignition but pretty sure I did not have it in the on position as the engine is supposed to be off when fueling up I would not have left it on. Not totally sure though.

I had an issue with my dash computer - I ran around one morning and didn't really focus on the fact that my gauge was at 3/8 and never moved. I ran out of fuel, had it towed to dealership (was still fairly new, so I was taking no chances). Dealer called to tell me I was out of gas, but the dash computer needed to be replaced. Done under warranty, and problems since.

Tried it today and no idea why I haven't been doing it before. Much easier and a bit quicker - certain brands have slightly easier (closer) pumps to use.

I filled up Sunday and put the bike on the center stand and left the key in the on position. It took about a gallon and a half and this time the gage read full up to the second to last level at the top.
