Great cut-away pics of the Motor!

Very nice, thank you! I need to study them a bit more to figure out how the final drive works -- I don't see the connection to the rear wheel but it's definitely better than the parts diagrams I've been looking at!

Probably sprocket, first picture right hand side. When will someone come out with a repair manual?

Yeah, I'm sure you're right. I'd love to see a cutaway including the transmission (chain) also. Seeing this makes me wonder if the variator and belt are actually part of the engine assembly. Asking since I recently received a new engine and am wondering if those parts are new or have 8,000+ miles on them. I'll definitely ask my dealer but am curious, particularly since it could delay my first belt change in a few thousand miles!

There is a repair manual available on ebay, it is a copy of the BMW shop manual out of Italy, it covers all bikes back to the R50. I think I paid $40 and it works off the disk. I do not believe BMW will come out with a manual for the general public as they want to service your bike. I was able to copy the disk to my hard drive of my computer using a iso buster software. When I get around to it I will use the same iso buster software and copy it to a memory stick

No, just the one for the variator/clutch. The other belt-like piece is the drive chain from the crankshaft...

Which is the timing chain? Is it the one with the guide-tensioner? Looks like a project to change.

AFAIK, the timing chain never needs to be replaced. I am curious about how big a PITA the belt is. Not sure anyone here has done it yet but I'd love to see a report. I remember the first time I replaced the belt and rollers on my Piaggio BV250 -- I was like "WTF, the dealer charged me THAT much for so little work?!?" It took me about 40 minutes the first time; now I'm down to about 20. I'm expecting a crazy charge from my dealer but we'll see.

I thought I read online that the belt and timing chain had to be replaced at 12,500miles. Seemed like bad design, glad to hear I was wrong.

For the Dr. Pulley clutch you need a spring sompression tool. or, in my case a charge for 30 minutes by south sound bmw who did the chang out for me.
they were nice guys and wanted to try out the new tool. LOL.
If your local BMW shop is cool, they might do that. Other wise you might have to southern engineer a compressor tool, the one form BMW is over $300...
