2020 C650GT oil filter removal! And the mysterious filter screen... Help!

Two things really:

1) Unable to get the oil filter off. Can't seem to get a strap-type wrench on it with enough leverage to turn it. Also have a metal loop wrench with the same issue. Bottom of the engine is in the way, and I have not removed any left side plastic. Even went and bought a socket type wrench that would fit over the end of the filter and you could use a socket wrench to turn it, though the one I have does not quite fit. Will try swapping it out for a different size (slightly larger).

Any suggestions? Should I try pulling all the left side plastic off?

2) Drained the bottom reservoir and then pulled the side drain plug, using some foil to protect the side stand. Problem is, I could not find the screen insert when I pulled the cap off. Nothing came with it and sticking a finger in there (gloved) I could not feel anything to slide out. Yes, I had a long screw driver inserted but couldn't figure out where it was!

Any thoughts on that mystery?!

But I was able to find a claw-like filter wrench at the local Auto place for $15 that finally worked great and loosened the filter so I could get it removed, albeit with a few scratches on it. Still wondering about the oil screen and where it went to.

The oil filter on my Mercedes 250GLK was unmovable with a standard autoparts store wrench even though it was the correct size, just spun on the filter. So I got one of the more precisely machined, heavier duty ones off Amazon and that works perfectly.
Your small oil screen filter may have gone AWOL during a previous oil change.

I have seen mechanics driving a big screwdriver with a hammer right through the old oil filter and then use the the screwdriver handle to twist the oil filter.

I have seen mechanics driving a big screwdriver with a hammer right through the old oil filter and then use the the screwdriver handle to twist the oil filter.

Ha, I have done that before on older cars! Not a pleasant experience and once I even tore the oil filter a little before finally getting it off.

Did that once myself, years back. Worked like a charm (if a bit messy).

This is what actually worked. Happy it was $15 instead of the specialized, German engineered one from BMW for over $80.
