I swear by the original BMW stuff for two reasons:
- it is definitely unquestionably correct to use
- it is barely any more expensive than any other name brand motorcyle specific oil. You do want motorcycle engine specific oil, not car engine oil.

Hi.
I have been using BMW Advantec 5w40 oil since the beginning. I read that Shell actually makes it for BMW. I have seen several reviews of this oil and there were no complaints about it.

You can find good (better) equivalents at just about any oil company.
I'm talking here only about the characteristic properties of the oils:
Mobil 1 has oils of exceptional quality compared with many competitors. Red Line are a level above almost everyone else if you're looking for the must-have.
Apart from these realities (chemical composition and typical characteristics), it should be borne in mind that C650 engines use special coatings that are incompatible with certain additives.
The grade recommended by BMW (15W50) is also important in our case. To begin with, it's important to distinguish between fluidity and viscosity when talking about lubricating oils. Fluidity determines the oil's ability to get into the smallest nooks and crannies of the engine and disperse easily. Viscosity determines the oil's ability to form a constant, protective film that adheres to surfaces.
BMW's recommendations are designed to ensure good lubrication at engine operating temperatures (and this is an engine that “likes” heat).
But that's not all: this oil has a high viscosity for sealing mechanisms such as chain tensioner pistons and oil pumps. It also ensures the smooth running of oil bearings on camshafts and balancer shafts, for example.

I apologize for what I wrote above, I didn't mean to mislead anyone, Kiss4u is right. 5w40 is not recommended for this engine, BMW recommended 15w50.
