Belt life

I know the service manual calls for the belt to be changed at 20,000km or 12,000miles but the question is how far are you pushing it till you replace it and are there signs that it needs replacing.

i would push another 3 thousand miles with a belt, i would check the wear at 12k though.

I just got my 12K service and two BMW dealerships said belt replacement was now a mandated replacement at 12K (and I think 20K miles) or the warranty was void.

That does not sound right that you would change the belt at 20000 miles after it was changed at 12000. Only 8000 miles on a new belt. PS my dealer who likes to sell,you stuff has not said a word about the requirement that you have to change the belt at 12000 miles.

I may be wrong but I though it was 12,000 miles or 20,000 km which are effectively the same. Not both figures in miles or kilometers.

I believe you're right I usually mentally multiply kilometers by 0.6 to yield a fairly accurate conversion to miles.
