As a consequence of reading the recent posts here, I went out to the garage and did some tread-depth measurement.
I had measured the City Grip 2 max depth, when new, at 6/32 and 7/32 (F/R). Now, they're about 4/32 and 5/32. That's after almost exactly 4,000 miles on them, so it looks as if their longevity will be satisfactory (in answer to a question I posed for myself, post #12 here).
