C650GT chaincase removal and repainting

I've just bought a 2016 C650GT with less than 3000 miles on the clock. Sadly it seems that it's been stored for long periods, and sometimes stored after being ridden on salted roads without being cleaned. As a result there is some corrosion on the final drive chaincase; thankfully it seems to be confined to the removable piece, the part that forms the swinging arm seem OK. My intention is to remove the chaincase cover, strip it and repaint it, but that raises two questions:

1. If I remove the chaincase, will I need to replace the gasket, and
2. Does anyone know what colour the paint should be. The bike colour is described as "burnt bronze" and the chaincase is quite a dark grey, with a textured finish. I don't expect to be able to replicate the textured finish, but I reckon that something gloss with a decent colour match will look OK. A RAL code or a recognisable name would be great, but anything else that helps to identify it would be very helpful.

So, it's over to the hive mind of the BMW Scooter forum for help

Thanks

Mike

Don't know about the color but how about painting it a color you would really like, rather than trying to go for factory original. These aren's high dollar collectible vintage cars and why not be a little creative. As for the gasket, it may be a good idea to just order and fit a new one. I did when I replaced my chain rail a few months ago. Can't remember if the old one could have been re-used, but I did take off the cover one more time and just re-used the new gasket. But, if you don't order a new gasket and the old one gets damaged taking the cover off, then you'll be stuck. They're not that expensive as I recall.

I agree. BMW changed to black chain cases for later models. They look much sharper than the original gray.

I've had the chain case open on two different GT's. One I re-used the gasket with a tube of Permatex gasket maker. The second I ordered a new gasket, info attached. That was for a 2013 where, I suspect, the case had never been opened. The gasket did not survive opening the chain case.

Thanks, this confirms what I suspected. I’ll get a new gasket before I start the job. Interesting about them moving to black. A decent gloss or even satin black would be much easier to keep clean and wouldn’t hold onto the moisture as much as the Matt finish does. I’ve got a copy of the relevant service info and it looks easy enough. It’ll be worth checking the tensioner while I’m in there, although with only 3000 miles on the clock, I’m not expecting any issues.

The infamous tensioner is not in the chain case. Chain rails are. They're spec'd to be changed every 15,000 miles to keep proper tension. PRO TIP. Don't throw out old chain rails. When a new chain is installed, you go back to chain rail #1.
