I have a uk BMW CE04 fitted with the fast charger I'm looking for a short 3m long cable for fast charging at longer journeys. I've seen this one but I'm unsure if its correct type and will it allow for maximum fast charging at the widest choice of public chargers in the uk :

SYNCWIRE Type 2 Charging Cable 22kW 3m 32A 3 Phase - Mode 3 Type 2
to Type 2 EV Charging Cable for EV & PHEV for Model S/X/Y/3, ID.3, ID.4,
ID.5, E-Tron, e-208, I4, IX1, Kona, XC40, ENYAQ, Zoe etc | B0C6XX961

Hope someone has a better idea than me. Bmw seems to offer 3 cable options for the bike :

****

1. Cables with up to 7.4 kW
charging power: 1-phase, 32 amps, 2.35 kg in weight.
Recommended in countries with mainly single-phase charging posts.

2.Cables with up to 22 kW
charging power: 3-phase, 32 amps, 3.3 kg in weight. This makes it possible to max out the CE 04's charging power in any situation. As a result, the cable is a little bigger and heavier than the other two variants.

3.
Cables with up to 11 kW charging power: 3-phase, 20 amps, 2.15 kg in weight. This is our smallest and lightest charging cable. However, at single-phase
charging posts, you will not be using the full potential of the CE 04's charging speed. Yet, in countries with mainly 3-phase charging posts, it is a good and practical solution.

Its the 2nd one I'm trying to replicate to max out the CE 04's charging power in any situation, I've tried to find the bmw part number for the oem one that does this but searches were contradictory. I appreciate that this might be a 5m cable but may prefer the oem one, dealer seems to know less than me and I'm not keen to pay £300.

Hi,

I have the reduced powered version of the CE 04, without the fast charger option. As for charging cables, I have the following

1. Mennekes Mode 3 Type 2 20A 3-Phase. It is four metres long. Part No. 36211
2. Mennekes Mode 3 Type 2 32A 3-Phase. It is four metres long. Part No. 36212

Both are about £250 - £300 new, however, I paid nowhere near those prices as I purchased mine - which were used - on that auction site...

Neither of the two made any difference when charging my CE 04 at public chargers due to the onboard charger being 2.4kW, so I carry the first one as it is lighter and slimmer. I've not had any problems in the two-plus years of using them.

In your position, I would go for the Mennekes cable at No. 2.

Alternatively, there is a company called EV Cables. Theirs are cheaper than Mennekes, come in all sorts of lengths, and are UK-made, so worth a look if you are after a new charging cable.

Thanks for that, useful. I'm not in a rush so I might try and find out the bmw part number for the official bmw 22 kW charging power: 3-phase, 32 amps cable then look for it on that same auction site. It might be the same as an i4 or mini car one.

UK based. I have one of these:

Type 2 Untethered Mode 3. Three phase 16 or 32 Amp Charging Cable.

Motorrad say this on their site:

• “Cables with up to 22 kW charging power: 3-phase, 32 amps, 3.3 kg in weight. This makes it possible to max out the CE 04’s charging power in any situation. As a result, the cable is a little bigger and heavier than the other two variants.

• Cables with up to 11 kW charging power: 3-phase, 20 amps, 2.15 kg in weight. This is our smallest and lightest charging cable. However, at single-phase charging posts, you will not be using the full potential of the CE 04’s charging speed. Yet, in countries with mainly 3-phase charging posts, it is a good and practical solution.”

I found the second one a bit confusing (three phase but lighter?) but not wanting to be any slower than I need to be at charge points, I opted for the above. I believe the CE 04 can handle three phase. Quite a few of the commercial type 2 points out there are three phase 11kW and 22kW, even – mostly the ones available alongside the CCS and Chademo higher wattage tethered chargers, and also some commercial premises.

My cable is 3½ metres and I find it just about right…

NB – UK three phase is 400V.

One more thing; when charging with three phases the minimum charging current setting on my CE04 becomes 3 x 6A. Where possible I like to set my bike to charge slowly to maximise battery lifetime but being forced into the 18A charge rate setting with three-phase charging goes against this. My bike is still using an old version of software so feel free correct me if future updates allow a lower three-phase charge current setting.

Yeh, with the fast charger option the type 2 cable choice is important particularly if like me, you want as compact and light a cable as you can get but still want to access the highest charge rate (around 7kW). The CE 04 fast charger will allow up to 30 amps on one phase or 10 amps on 3 phase. Obviously the shorter 3m long cables you can buy save a lot of bulk and the 22kW 3 phase cables will allow you to access maximum charge rate on either 3 or one phase charger. A 7kW one phase cable will have a thinner cable and be less bulky than the 22kW 3 phase cable and will also allow you to access the maximum charging rate on either a 3 phase or one phase charger. The difference is that it can't deliver max charge rate on 3 phase charger that is less than 22kW whereas the 22kW 3 phase cable can do so on a 3 phase charger of at least 11kW. The single phase cable on an 11kW 3 phase charger will only charge at around 3.6kW. In my experience most 3 phase public chargers are 22kW although there are a lot of Tesla wall chargers around that are only do up to 11kW 3 phase. Almost all one phase public chargers are 7kW including most home chargers. If you were to buy an 11kW (instead of 22kW) 3 phase cable you would be limiting yourself to around 3.6kW on any single phase charger but could get the max charge rate on any 3 phase charger 11kW or above. 22kW 3phase cable is the best choice for maximising charge rate in the most situations. I went for the 7kW one phase cable which is the most compact one. $100 AUD from AliExpress. Very good quality. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/100....order_list.order_list_main.30.7a211802UV2NAw

Thanks your excellent feedback @Bob66, @Jojo and @korinthias. Back to my original post I've bought on Amazon but not used yet due to fear of blowing up the bike the one mentioned:

SYNCWIRE Type 2 Charging Cable 22kW 3m 32A 3 Phase - Mode 3 Type 2
to Type 2 EV Charging Cable for EV & PHEV for Model S/X/Y/3, ID.3, ID.4,
ID.5, E-Tron, e-208, I4, IX1, Kona, XC40, ENYAQ, Zoe etc | B0C6XX961

Its 3m long so I can just about fit it and my helmet in the under seat storage which is great for my use. The spec should allow for max fast charging in most places if i understood it ok. I read on here that the fast charging tech on the CE04 is the same as the bmw i4 & iX and they are mentioned in the sales info.

I won't hold anyone to it but is that specification going to blow my bike up ?

No, it won't blow up your bike, unless it's faulty or made by a shonky company. Even in that case your bike would probably not be harmed and worse case the cable might simply not work or overheat and melt if for some reason the thermal switches in the connectors don't trip out. Any Type 2 to Type 2 cable should work on any EV with that type of AC connector. It's just a fancy extension lead with a bit better protection and smarts. Appears to be legit and 6mm2 cable conductors is the correct size for 22kW and 32amps. If you are worried about it, it is always a good idea, at least on the first use, to check if the cable and connector plugs are getting warm after a few minutes and then after say 20 minutes. Generally it shouldn't get more than barely warm although in direct sunlight it may get a lot warmer but nowhere near too hot to hold. https://www.syncwire.com/products/t...SH-6HYzpBBwT7l7vM1p37X2lCPdmxj8vxg92r-YntsyFQ
