Cleaning the CVT

I searched and found this information in several places. The small screws that hold the cvt housing must be tightened to 10Nm, and the screw that holds the variator and the clutch must be tightened to 100Nm.
I took off the cvt cover yesterday and blew it all out with high pressure air. It was quite dusty, it was time to clean it. The scooter has 11,800 km. I plan to change the belt and rollers at 20,000 km.
Does anyone have experience with the Malossi cvt belt, or should I buy the OEM BMW set instead?

I have 1 more question. How many cm is the marked distance on the variator? I forgot to weigh it when I took it apart yesterday. I would like to order a removal tool for it, but I don't know how big it should be.
Thanks.

I do not have direct experience with the Malossi products, but there are owners over on the Facebook forum (seemingly very experienced in motorcycling) who do. The vast majority of comments there were positive. I think acceleration was improved, RPMS increased slightly, and top end was not as robust, but I am going off of memory. I think it is posted here someplace and maybe @byee has it installed?

Yes, I saw a Dutch guy, he changed it to a malossi and was happy with it. I just asked to see if there are people here who already use this brand.

@jokerface That is awesome information. Thanks for sharing. Have you noticed an improvment in the smoothness of the clutch since cleaning it?

Hi.
I took it apart because I was curious about the condition of the cvt. It was dusty (but that's no wonder after so many km), but there was no oil leakage. I blew this dust out with a powerful air compressor and it looks and works like new. It used to have a screeching sound when I gave it more gas, but now it doesn't. I thought I would clean it again after 5,000 km. I think it will be good.

Just did an oil and filter change and decided to clean the CVT as well. This is at 6000 miles and it was dusty and a little dirty but way less than my Vespas use to get in about half that mileage. I did not take the clutch bell off just got into it as good as I could with my air compressor. (Once the cover is off you can get into it pretty good.) I'm glad I did it as it's to cold for me to ride right, now anyway and it's good maintenance, and I know what I'm getting into next time I do it. I would say it was harder than my Vespas because there were just sooo many screws to remove but still not to bad.

Hello. Today I took apart the CVT housing and blew it out with a compressor. It wasn't that dusty, since I did it last year, but I took some photos now, in case anyone is interested in what it looks like. It's a simple job, worth doing.

Oh i see. You got the Gates 27x1004 installed. Wondering if the Mitsuboshi 30x1016 will work in your C400.
Please tell when you installed it.

Hi, I haven't installed it, this is the original factory belt. I'll let it run for another 5000Km and then I'll replace it with a Mitsuboshi belt. I understand that Gates belts are also 30x1016. Or am I not understanding correctly? Please help me with this.
I only took this photo to show what the belt looks like after 15,000km.

Hi, when you look at Vids from C400 especially when changing to Malossi Parts you can see Gates Powerlink Belts like yours 27 mm x 1004 mm. On the other side you can see sometimes Gates Powerlink 27 x 1031 in the C400 CVT.
I owned a Voge Sr 4 Scooter with same parts like BMW C 400 and I got a Gate Powerlink 27 x 1031.
And there is no Gates belt with 30x1016. Only this Mitsuboshi. So I tried it but with no success. It doesnt work.So much noise. I had to change to the old one.
Maybe i will try 27x1004. Its a little bit shorter and therefore it runs smoother.

Hi, I'm going to order the Mitsuboshi belt from this site. The description says it replaces the OEM BMW 24828395830 belt. Unfortunately, there's no size listed here, but I'll ask them via email if they can help. If they answer, I'll post it here.
I see you're from Germany, this is a Czech business, I think they ship to you too.

mitsuboshi belt

I cant change the language on this side. But i saw they got another belt for C 400 169 Euro.
The Mitsuboshi is cheaper. Please let us now what size it is.
Regards

"Hello, unfortunately we do not have any specifications for this belt from the supplier...."

That's all I got from them. I won't go far with it :(

My experience replacing the CVT belt on a BMW C400X – hopefully this helps someone

I wanted to share my recent experience in case it helps someone avoid the same problem.

My scooter is a 2022 BMW C400X with approximately 17,300 km on the odometer. I decided to perform preventive CVT maintenance and replaced the following parts:

  • New Mitsuboshi CVT belt (sold as a replacement for BMW part number 24828395830)
  • New genuine BMW rollers
  • New genuine BMW slide pieces
During the service I also carefully inspected the entire CVT.

Everything was in excellent condition:

  • the variator faces were smooth with no wear,
  • the clutch bell showed no signs of overheating,
  • the clutch shoes had perfectly even wear,
  • all bearings rotated smoothly,
  • the CVT housing was thoroughly cleaned before reassembly.
The installation was carried out exactly according to the BMW service manual, using the specified tightening torques and procedures.

The problem

Immediately after the repair I noticed a strange knocking/clattering noise at idle coming from the CVT.

At first I thought I had made a mistake during assembly.

I disassembled the transmission again several times and checked everything:

  • roller orientation,
  • slide pieces,
  • torque values,
  • clutch assembly,
  • variator,
  • bearings,
  • belt alignment.
Everything appeared to be correct.

The scooter rode perfectly. There were no vibrations, no loss of performance and no abnormal behavior while riding.

The noise was only present at idle.

Finding the cause

After removing the CVT cover again, I started the engine while observing the transmission.

I finally discovered the source of the noise.

The inside of the Mitsuboshi belt occasionally touched the plastic guide roller located in the center of the CVT cover.

Every time the belt contacted the roller, it produced the knocking sound.

After only about 18 km, visible wear marks had already appeared on the inside of the belt.

The plastic guide roller also showed contact marks.

(Photos attached.)

Important

The original BMW belt never produced this behavior.

I cannot say whether my belt was defective or whether this is simply a manufacturing tolerance issue.

For that reason I have returned the belt for an official warranty inspection by the importer.

My advice

I'm not saying that all Mitsuboshi belts are bad.

Many riders use them without any issues.

I'm simply sharing what happened in my particular case.

If you replace the CVT belt on a BMW C400X, I recommend checking for this before assuming everything is fine.

If you hear a knocking or clattering noise at idle after replacing the belt:

  • remove the CVT cover,
  • observe the belt while the engine is idling,
  • check whether the belt is contacting the plastic guide roller,
  • inspect the inside of the belt for fresh wear marks.
It may save you many hours of unnecessary troubleshooting.

Conclusion

In the end, this "cheaper" aftermarket belt became much more expensive due to the extra labor, replacement hardware, shipping costs, and the possibility of replacing the damaged guide roller.

Personally, I have decided to go back to a genuine BMW OEM belt.

I hope this information helps someone else avoid the same experience.

Hi.
Does anyone know what the green paint mark on the OEM BMW variator rollers means? Both my original rollers and my new genuine BMW rollers have it, but the service manual doesn't mention it.

A quick update on my CVT issue.

I finally reassembled the entire CVT using only genuine BMW parts. I installed a new OEM Gates drive belt, a new OEM guide roller (roll pin), new hardware where required, and followed the BMW service manual step by step. Everything was tightened to the specified torque, and I applied grease only where BMW specifies.

Today I took the scooter for a 20 km (12.5 mile) test ride, and I'm happy to say that the strange noise is gone. Hopefully it stays that way, but so far everything is working exactly as it should.

This whole experience taught me an expensive lesson. I originally tried to save some money by using an aftermarket Mitsuboshi belt, but in the end it cost me much more due to the damage it caused. From now on, I'll only use genuine BMW/OEM CVT parts, even if they cost twice as much.

I hope my experience helps other C400 owners avoid the same mistake.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice and shared their experience throughout this process.
