Day time running lights

BMW claims that the day time LED running lights offer more visibility but when switched on, the dim headlamp is automatically switched off. With the Dim on, the LED is still on but in a dimmer mode.

What are your thoughts on the matter, do you use the LEDs or the dim light by day?

P.S. I've looked for a thread on the matter but could not find one. Kindly forgive me if a previous thread exists.

No I live in Malta, Europe. The LED lights came as part of the high line package.

"Another feature which enhances riding safety as well as providing a highly impressive visual touch is LED daytime running light. BMW Motorrad is the first manufacturer to use the "angel eyes" with LED technology in the maxi scooters C 600 Sport and C 650 GT."

Ah, we don't have the "Angel Eyes" lights here in the states. I have a cluster of LEDs in the center of the fairing that are on at all times, and the two halogen lights (one low beam, the other high beam). The LEDs and the low beam are always on when the engine is running. I'm not sure but I THINK the low beam goes out when I turn on the high beam. I'll have to check one day.
 
As edumakatted said both the lights are on here in Canada also. We have almost the same rules here in Canada. As in the states. Our cars run with daytime running lights also but in the states I think that is not a requirement. Correct me if I am wrong. This may also differ from state to state.

Daytime running lights aren't mandatory in the US so far though they are showing up on newer cars, might depend on the year of the vehicle as per running light requirements. I ride with the high beam(s) on all the bikes I've had during day time. On most I've had a modulator on the high beam lamp as well. You can't be too conspicuous in a bike. The Oregon and Washington state rider's handbook both recommend keeping high beams on during the daylight hours for safety as well. I ordered a Kisan headlight modulator for my GT, the one they list in their application guide and found out that it was in error, what they shipped had different plug and socket configuration than the GT. I decided to wait until the warranty runs out on my scooter and then install their modulator that's designed for the H7 55W bulb.

I'm still surprised that BMW has a three year warranty, most all other bikes seem to have only a one year guarantee.
 
I've been doing some research and it seems that studies claim that day light running lights offer more visibility. I've also come across this video from BMW which claims the same. http://youtu.be/yMyztJGlutY.

Watching the video you will begin to agree but for me I noted the dullness of the day that the video was shot in. Here in Malta it is normally brighter than that most winter days let alone in the blistering summer sun. For summer I will be using my high beams which in my opinion are more visible due to Colour and size.

DRLs offer more visibility if you're the only vehicle on the road. In a SEA of vehicles running DRLs, however, you'll quickly disappear. My biggest concern when they started equipping cars with them over here in the States. For awhile, only motorcycles had their headlights on in the day time and it was easy to see them. Now, they're just another headlight on in a sea of headlights so they are far more difficult to pick out.

I agree! I am baffled, though, that more people don't use head light modulators, which always catch my eye. My plans are always to install a modulator, but, I never seem to get around to it.
