Good evening, I have bought a BMW C400 GT and I have 2900 kilometers.

my problem is that in quiet turns at about 30-50 km an hour there is a noise as if something is heavy inside the engine.

I took it to an authorized repair shop and he told me that it is normal and that some sounds and some don't.

I'm uploading the video from the sound so you can see it too at idle, it's 1,700 to 1,900 revolutions, is this correct?

The sound seems normal, i don't detect any difference... its actually quieter than most c 400 ! (mine is much noisier with metallic sounds, especially when cold)
It should idle at 1400 - 1500. the service centre needs to set it right

My idle speed is also between 1400 and 1500 rpm when the bike is warm. I also did not hear anything unusual in your video. But there are so many variables to consider. Edit: just started my bike and it idles between 1700 and 1900 for about a minute. Then settles into 1400 to 1500.

Did you always hear this sound or did it just start and if so did you change anything on the bike?

That engine is going to fail.

Just a little humor!
It sounds pretty good to me but tough to judge completely on computer speakers. Though I love the bike, BMW sure could have made it a bit more refined in some areas. But, no such thing as a Cinderella bike unless you go custom build. I hope that all is well and the bike remains trouble free for you (and that this is not an issue).

I just purchased a new 2023 C400GT and about 400 miles in, the engine started making a noise while accelerating, that sound like loose metallic scraping, coming from the exhaust pipe, is the best that I can describe it. It's intermittent but annoying. I brought it to the dealer and they said to mention it to the service department when I bring it in for it's first service. Crossing my fingers...

So when you brought it to the dealer they did not even have someone come out take it for a ride and listen to it? That seams strange. Most places will usually at least do that to determine if there is something out of wack.

Scooters sound different from motorcycles for sure. I've owned a few over the years and if I let every sound worry me it would have driven me crazy. I suffer from hearing loss and ware ear plugs when I ride to cut down the wind noise. But when I ride with out my plugs in it always sounds like the scooter is rattling somewhere. Sometimes I hear a reattle of the rollers in the transmission. As mentioned in one of these posts the belt can make some noise from expansion. There are a lot of moving parts and what you are hearing is probably nothing to be concerned about. But it is always a good idea to have these things checked out. I heard a rattling sound on my Indian Challenger once and it turned out to be a tooth broken in the starter gears so you never know.

Yes, the service manager did take it for a drive but he used a full face helmet and said he didn't hear anything unusual. The helmet I use is a Pit Boss and can hear everything coming out of that engine.

Are you use to the way scooters sound? When they are moving they make some rattle noises. If the service manager wes not concerned about what he heard and you are not noticing anything running amuck, I woiuld not be to concerned.

Just out of curiosity, have you cleaned the brakes? The tolerances on this bike is really tight and those rotors may make glancing contact with the pads.

I have same sounds on my c400x sport (2021) at 13 000 km...after 3000 кm more, the engine died....and now I'm waiting for a new engine from Germany. I was lucky I still had 24 days left on the warranty.

Could you tell us some more about your "engine died" situation, please?

I had an engine problem on my '22 C 400 GT, when it had about 5,600 miles on it (9,000 km). It lost a significant amount of power and top speed (at least 20%). I got an informal report that a valve-spring keeper had broken or fell off or something. I did a VERY long report of this at https://www.bmw-scooters.com/index....brand-new-23-c-400-gt-free-part-i-of-ii.2932/ . Eventually, BMW gave me a new '23 C 400 GT as a replacement.

So I was wondering about the details of your situation.

Crankshaft and piston are irretrievably damaged. the problem is so great that the entire engine needs to be replaced. I have always serviced the scooter only at a BMW warranty service. Just a year ago I heard strange noises, like metal hitting metal. I told the repair shop (BMW), but they didn't take me seriously. Тhey said that the problem was with the variator rollers and they would replace them after a year at the next service.... after half a year the engine died completely.

Ah, I’m sorry to hear about your troubles.

Thank you for the full description, though.

Oh, by the way, during my five months without my scooter I bought a Royal Enfield Meteor 350. It still brings a smile whenever I ride it — which is often — and for about half the price of the Beemer.

My 2023 c400gt today showed the message on TFT "fault in engine control..onward journey possible, ride it to a specialist shop" the message went away but scooter keeps shutting off intermittently, as well as on wide open throttle acts like fuel cut off..weird, going in for the 10k kms service in the next few days. 9187 kms current mileage.

i got the same message before my engine died

This makes three or four engine problems on new-ish C 400 GTs. I know, a small sample size, given the community here on the forum, but it does not seem to be a great sign.

If I still have my C 400 GT in two years, it looks like I'll be buying the extended warranty from BMW before the initial one expires.

Extended warranty is a must.
Yep, I have every intention of buying an extended warranty -- again! -- but this time I will wait a bit. Let me explain.

1) In June 2022, I picked up my brand new '22 C 400 GT that I had ordered a couple weeks prior.

2) In September 2022, I decided, after a few months of riding it, that the GT was definitely a "keeper," so I bought the max-length extended warranty, just to get that out of the way, before any price increase in the warranty, etc. I've typically kept new bikes for about five years each over the years, I'm not getting any younger, and thought that this might be my last bike (I was wrong on that, by at least two bikes), and so forth.

3) In May 2023, after about 5,600 miles, I had an engine problem.

4) In October 2023, BMW replaced my '22 C 400 GT with a brand new '23 C 400 GT. You can read about that new-bike-for-old-bike exchange in my post https://www.bmw-scooters.com/index....brand-new-23-c-400-gt-free-part-i-of-ii.2932/, if you're curious.

Well, as part of that bike-replacement deal, I expected to get a complete refund for my extended warranty, and then buy a new one, but that didn't happen (yet). Here are some snippets from emails I exchanged with the local BMW dealership, in this case with the finance office there, just before the exchange of bikes was completed:

Local Finance Manager:

I was able to cancel your warranty, BMW refund amount is $789.85. The new warranty is $1177.20. I added the difference of $387.35. You will see this listed as BMW Extended warranty. Total due tomorrow $566.35, which includes title and registration fees.

Me:

I'm back home now, and I'm a little confused about the amount of the refund.

I would've thought that the full purchase price -- $1,015.20 -- would've been the amount of the refund. My understanding -- and I've been wrong before, and will undoubtedly be wrong in the future -- of the extended warranty is that it was to kick in, become active, only AFTER the factory warranty expired.

That factory warranty on the '22 was for three-years/36,000 miles. Since neither of those conditions was met, I thought that the extended warranty was not active yet, that it was just sitting in the on-deck circle, waiting for the factory warranty to expire. And the reason I bought it back in September was just that I had some spare cash lying around, and just thought I'd take care of the purchase before I frittered that spare cash away.

If the extended warranty is somehow, in some sense, active the moment it's purchased, then I don't think that I want to buy an extended warranty for the '23 for another three years or so.

Local Finance Manager:

You are correct, the warranty does kick in at the end of the regular warranty period. When you purchase a new vehicle, you are offered a certain price to extend your warranty. A year has transpired since your initial purchase, so it would it not be a full refund of purchase price. The warranty refund is prorated based on the initial purchase price less the time that has transpired. Just let me know if you would like the warranty on the new scooter before you come in tomorrow, so I can make sure the paperwork is correct.

When all was said done, when the paperwork to get the newer bike was completed, I declined to get a second extended warranty ... just yet. I was really annoyed that I didn't get a full refund for a warranty that was not due to become active for another two years, and I still don't understand the double-talk financial gobbledy-gook.

So I still plan to get the warranty, but I will wait until the three years is about to expire on the initial factory warranty. I don't want to go through this bullshit again, in case I sell the bike, or have another problem that results in BMW's giving me a second new bike, etc. If the price increases over the next two years, so be it, but they really pissed me off when they didn't give me a full refund.
