This weird hard rattling sound appeared last week. Before that it was a "screeching" sound when taking off. It has recently been serviced and is due for a belt replacement next service. Anyone familiar with this sound and knows what might be causing it? Help would be greatly appreciated.

I guess it is time to get both the timing chain tensioner done and CVT belt. Thinking about directly upgrading to the hydrolic belt as I believe my scoot still has the original mechanical tensioner. Anyone with experience getting this done (or doing this themselves?)

The link you posted is not for the timing chain tensioner - it's a guide rail setup for the final drive chain after the transmission. They wear, but slowly and is not the cause of the noise you are hearing.

I replaced my transmission belt not too long ago at 18K miles and the old one was barely worn at all, it could have continued easily another 10K miles, maybe more.

I recently bought three OEM BMW timing chain tensioners so I would be set for the next 20K or so miles, after which I may no longer have the bike, may decide to convert to the hydraulic tensioner, or just keep swapping out old for new mechanical tensioners. I have the crankshaft locking tool and it's an easy job. Definitely get a factory fresh one, either BMW labeled or get the KYMCO equivalent one that is somewhat cheaper, but do not buy a used mechanical tensioner! I think the BMW dealer price is around $90.

Where did you get these? BMW Australia no longer sells them as they only sell the hydraulic conversion kit. Hope this is covered under the recall. Will call the service centre later today.

I got them off Ebay (US), here's one that is located in Malaysia, that could be a good option for you being in Australia, cost is $38 plus shipping etc:

Don't worry about the reference to the BMW I3, it's the exact same tensioner (as per the part no).

Bmw supposedly won't sell you the mechanical tensioner. I went through 4 mechanicals before they finally replaced it with the hydrolic tensioner under warranty because the last one died within the 2 year warranty.
Thanks for your input mate. I read elsewhere that you ride your bike hard. So do I. I am curious to learn more about your set up and (pro-active) service / part replacement routine if you don't mind sharing! I feel like there's a world of difference between those 'gentlemanly riders' and those who ride hard in terms of best practice in relation to maintenance and prevention.
