Larger windscreen for C650GT

Sorry SteveADV, I didn’t know there were any Hog riders in here.

And I don’t mean to impugn the virtue of hirsute porcine mammals.

I should have said that the original screen is curved like a beer-belly and the CalSci screen is round like a Tampon-tube.:D

I recently fitted a large Calsi screen to my 2016GT and like others needed to modify the mounting holes, it appears that Calsi are still working to their original (incorrect) dimensions. Having said that it's far better than the original BMW one which merely deflected turbulent air onto my helmet unless the screen was positioned at it's lowest setting.
 
ZTechnik VStream Touring Windshield for C650GT - Z2496

I know that VStream windshield sounds like it is not well liked around here due to back pressure, but I like that it is very clear and when I saw it was on sale cheaper than a wunderlich spoiler, I couldn't resist pulling the trigger. I can't imagine it being worse than the stock (I prefer air on my back then on my face in this weather)


One thing that I wasn't able to confirm before purchase was if there would be any issue installing on the 2017 since they list the same part number for ALL C650GT.

I figured what the heck, worse case I'll have to deal with the problem with the dremel.

Well, I am happy to report, the screen installed without modification. The holes were not "round" but instead were long horizontally, so I imagine it would fit both generations.

I have not had a chance to ride with it on yet since even last night we saw snow here. However, once I'm done typing this, I will probably go out for a spin and see.

Who knows, I might even come back and post pictures and stuff.

When the Aeroflow screen on my old K1200LT finally started developing some cracks I wasn't able to replace it with another Aeroflow as they had stopped making that shield some years ago. Fortunately VStream still makes a model for the K1200LT and thanks to the suggestion of several other riders who held on to their trusty K1200LTs, I bought one. It took some getting used to, as it looks "odd" with the flare at the top of the screen but it works VERY well. I haven't had my passenger testify to its effectiveness from her position on the bike yet, but from my standpoint it works about as well as the old Aeroflow. I wasn't aware they started making screens for the C650GT. That's good to know.

Yes they have three sizes, me really wanting to hide behind a screen bought the "Touring" version and wow is it big.
I can only see over the screen when it is on its lowest setting and I'm sitting straight up.

I'm about 5'10~5'11 with short legs so.... I think the Touring is probably more suitable for 6'2 + riders.

However I can say I don't mind looking through it. It was very clear so while it probably wasn't the best choice I am going to give it a go. I rode today without earplugs (due to the temperature I only hop on the highway for maybe 5 mins, the rest were max 80km/hr roads). I was able to hear music clearly with volumn at mid level where as with the stock windscreen I wasn't able to really do that unless I had it all the way down in which case my face would freeze lol.
 
I’m 5’8, and never really had any complaints with the stock screen on the C650GT. However, with my recent acquisition of a 2016 R1200RT, I thought that the stock windscreen sucked. That, I replaced with the Aeroflow medium, and it’s so much better than the stock
 
I came to this thread originally looking for a solution as I found the original screen a bit on the low side.

Recently I had to call out BMW assist due to a flat battery (my fault). After the guy got it going I noticed the screen didn't work. The mechanic said "no problem it just needs resetting". Plugged in his diagnostic tool, operated the screen a couple of times from the laptop and alls good.

It now raises at least 2 inches higher than before and at 6ft tall on it's tallest setting it's a little high for me (just above eye level).

No need for a new screen after all

I recently had my 2016 Scoot in for service and they (BMW) did a software update, no change to the screen height.
I then installed the Givi screen, and all is good now. I am 6ft4" and the Givi screen is more than adequate. It came with separate hand wind deflectors too, but since the screen has hand wind deflectors already, I find I dont need them. Maybe when the fall comes and the temp drops.

It's not a software update but they can set the upper and lower limits of the screen via the diagnostics tool. In my case the upper limit when originally set up wasn't the upper limit that the mechanism was capable of.
 
I have the tall Aeroflow, and..im going to have to modify at least one hole.

With one side located (not tight) I can just barely spread the screen curve, and the top two on one wide will fit, but not the bottom.

Im guessing that this is because holes are put in the plastic before they are shaped, which is also what makes the holes slightly oval shaped as well..and IMHO, this leads to a lot of unplanned stretching and deformation that cant be accounted for on a flat drawing.

The right way would be, IMHO, machining holes on a jig _after_ shaping the material.

But that's just me.
 
You might consider sending it back - maybe they made a manufacturing error, or their design doesn't account for some late-model design change by BMW. If you think reforming the screen will help, put it in your oven at about 250 degrees on a piece of cardboard and you'll be able to alter the curvature.
 
Too big for oven..and yes, its clear that the holes from a flat piece, to a curved piece...do not flow to the RIGHT horizontal locations.

They right way to do this, that they are not doing, is the form that they heat mold to, should have plugs for the holes to have to meet by expanding the plastic in, not expecting the acrylic to magically flow -to-.

Or, just form it, then drill the holes.

I dremeled mine, it's fine now.
 
I got the tall one, it works fine.

Just the holes were "wrong", because of the way the screens are made. Holes first, then heated and laid over a form...nothing a dremel couldn't fix in short order.

..or a more expensive manuf process couldn't prevent in the first place.
 
Bornfree, Thanks for all your postings re:VStreams. Very accurate and because of this, thought I'd try. LOVE IT! have had little/no issues with backpressures (but I've only had it up to 70) but I will be watching for this. It really deflects the wind nicely. I did notice the slight drag when windscreen was fully elevate, small price to pay. Thanks again!
