Lumber support in seat

Hello all - this is the closest thread or info I've found on that rider lumbar support for the 2022 C400gt - I think I'm going to pull the trigger and do it - I just spoke with Andy and got the details - it requires me to send my entire seat to them - 3 week process to get it to come back if they can do it - I'll post pics here if I do.....
There is another builder, Seth Laam (https://www.laamseats.com/), who also may be able to help you. Far and away one of the best seat builders in America. If you want to chat with him, call don't email. You have to set up a prearranged ship-to date and he'll tell you how long it will take to get back to you.

C400GT - With Lumbar Support - From Utopia - This is my actual seat I mailed them - Looking forward to getting this back soon...looks good - hope it improves my comfort.
Actually, I am not normally a fan of back supports like that from the aesthetic perspective. To my eye, that looks fantastic! Really nice form and I hope that it performs for you!

Following up on this to see if anyone actually bought a Utopia backrest for their c400gt. They are now listed on the Utopia site. I don’t see how it would work with the built-in backrest, at least on the 2024 model.

Pdf was too large, so I took some screen shots
If you have a minute when you're all set, I'd like to see a pic, regarding the part where Utopia says it "folds forward."

As I think I mentioned to @StrangeCloud in a PM, I'd like to see how low it gets, because my wife gets onboard by stepping through my area -- I stand, kind of mushed against the handlebars -- and scooching herself toward the back of the scoot. I'm concerned, in terms of whether her entry and exit method would still be possible with the backrest installed.

BTW, the URL at Utopia is misleading, and I will point that out to them in a minute. For the C 400 GT, it's https://utpr.com/collections/bmw/products/copy-of-bmw-c650gt (i.e., note that 650 at the end -- the URL for the actual 650 is https://utpr.com/collections/bmw/products/bmw-c600-sport-and-c650gt ).

Got the Utopia backrest and installed it. Took about 45 minutes. It will fold ford for easier passenger boarding, but not totally flat. Here are some pics.

I am not sure if anyone answered the first question. I did modify my seat for more room. I was not very good with the looks but maybe you will get an idea. This gave me a couple more inches.

Has anyone removed or modified the lumbar support in the seat of the c400gt to give more space to sit further back from the bars? If so please give details, do you need to find some sort of plugs for bolt holes?
An owner on Advrider.com had removed the support and reported that he had good results. He found some really common household item to fill the holes. I don’t have the link to the post but it is there somewhere.

I have a question. It looks like all the modifications for this occur under the factory butt rest. Do you think that if you had to remove it that you would see it on the seat? I am getting this for my wife as she needs a back rest and I am kinda anal about how aftermarket mods could gorp up the factory seat if I want to remove it at a later date or if I want to sell it and the next owner does not want it.

I don't think so, as I understand your question.

Received my Utopia backrest on Saturday. Looks to be of pretty good quality. Like Strangecloud indicated, it took about 45 minutes to install. I did not have to remove the seat from the scooter.

Here is where you have to cut the seat cover and drill a hole.

Here is a view of the bottom of the seat with the bracket attached.

Here is the bracket from the top side. Pretty nice design in that there is a groove that fits the backrest so that it locks the bracket and the backrest together

This is all the farther mine would flip forward. Bill asked about a passenger mounting and I do it the same way as him. I lean up against the handlebars, lock the brakes and hold the scooter steady, and my wife holds onto my shoulder and she swings her leg over my seat to get to the other side and then moved back onto the passenger seat. A little different than she did before the backrest but she had no issue she said. She still has lots of room between her and the back rest and she really loved the storage pouch.

It does leave a little bit of a gap between the bottom/back of the backrest and the seat. I could not believe how much dirt was under the edge of the backrest when I first removed it to install this and it was a tight fit. I cannot imagine how much dirt is going to get under this gap. I might try to fill it by shoving some square black door/window closed cell foam in there to eliminate the gap.

One issue I see is that when you press back on the backrest, you are putting twisting forces on the seat highlighted below. I could see it flexing with me just putting my hand on it and pressing. I can only imagine how much this thing is going to flex when you have the weight of your upper body pressing on it and then hitting bumps too. I can see where this could easily crack the seat pan.

So I am going to have a piece of metal made to put on the underside of the seat pan that will spread the load over the entire area highlighted in red above. Here is what it will look like. This should work pretty well.

While I don't need or want this, this is for my wife. We normally ride two up on this. She gave up riding her Harley about 8 years ago because it was getting to heavy for her so we bought this and ride two up. She misses driving but when she does, her back would hurt but it never hurts when she is ridding pillion resting against the top case. I had a Versys X300 a few years back that I sold and while I loved the Vespas (both 150's and 300's) I had before and after the Versys, I really missed the Versys as I love to ride back roads and gravel roads. We mainly ride back roads (paved) with the BMW but I would never take the BMW down a gravel road. So the trade off was I could get a used Versys and I put a driver backrest on the BMW and the scooter is hers and I have the Versys. If she does not feel like driving, she can ride on the back of the BMW and I will drive.

Does the seat need to be removed for the install?
I don't have the Utopia on my C 400 GT (although I did install one on a Honda Valkyrie, 20+ years ago), but I can shed some light on your question:

- In post #32 above, @StrangeCloud doesn't seem to specifically address your question. Perhaps he'll chime in shortly.

- However, in post #37 above, @Msprygada states this: "I did not have to remove the seat from the scooter."
