Has anyone looked into upgrading their stock BMW variator and clutch with the Malossi setup?

I have not been able to find much info on the internet about the advantages and disadvantages of the Malossi setup.

Does anyone here know what the advantages & disadvantages are if I was to keep the same slider weight?

This is pretty much what I could glean from reading the posts. I hope it helps.

There was no disagreement on the forum on the outcomes of installing a Malossi kit.
  • Fuel consumption increases
  • Acceleration is meaningfully improved
  • Top end speed potential is reduced
  • Transmisson of power is much better/smoother
  • Improved torque
  • Noted: All three components, clutch, variator, belt, should be installed at the same time to realize the same outcomes.
I guess it is up to the individual to decide if any of these are beneficial, but the above is the consensus. I could not find any negative comments from those who installed the mod. There were the typical armchair quarterback comments by those questioning the owner's logic, benefits, etc.; but they don't have the mod installed...they may be correct, but I excluded them here because I think you were looking for information from those who installed the mod.

This, below, is from one user who loves the mod.

"There's little to gain from the electronic side. What truly makes a huge difference is changing the transmission. I got the full Malossi kit and my c400gt runs like the devil doing 0-80km/h in 5 seconds and 0-100 in under 8 sec.

The only item which raises concerns with me is the decrease of top end speed. Everything else is promising.

Pleasure. And trust me, with all of your contributions I am just simply returning a favor.

When I lived in Canada the top speed of tis bike would get me locked up (tongue in cheek)! OPP were very nice but definitely enforcers. But I'm a retired cop so that curried some favor.

I'm new with scooter mods, which item is the full kit? And how much top end did you lose? Thank you

Hi Shah. I was just the messenger on that one. That was the experience of another owner from a different forum. Searched the forum again and saw that this thing can be tweaked for more power down low or more torque at the bottom. Not my thing though so I am really no help other than posting the kit below.

I installed the Malossi clutch on a Yamaha Majesty 400. Yes it was smoother vibration wise, small amount. Operation of clutch was amazing over the OEM 3-shoe clutch. As far As variators go, I do my own trickery by buying new rollers ( or sliders) and adding weight, ( epoxy filled center, grind out untill you acheive the weight you want) but the trick is make them weight EXACTLY the same ( all 6 or 8). Smoother yet ! And more weight means a little slower take off, but slightly lower RPM at given speed. Also tuning the existing variator w/springs, becomes an experiment but once you got it you’ll be happy IMO.
 
IDK what is available, but my impression from a 1-day riding C400X is that it is choked by the exhaust, not variator or clutch. Clutch seemed perfect, frankly. I would advise some exhaust mods first.
GPR Pentaroad, perhaps. It is homologated.
My GPR Furore 4 Evo on my C650 Sport doing wonders...
 
More on topic - Malossi MHR 2000 is made to run at high revs always, 7000rpm which is 2000 more than stock I believe.
It sounds annoying to all road users incl. the rider :) that’s why they spell “racing use only”. You may find the chart somewhere.
Higher revs equal higher wear plus higher petrol consumption plus higher oil degradation plus more torque and faster acceleration.
One has to decide whether that is an acceptable formula, given you can get to higher torque and acceleration with other methods.
 
I used to subscribe to the faster, scooter club. I find that out touring , I’m happier running along at lower RPMs. even a small amount equates to a more relaxed ride. I read there Are variators that have better/faster take off AND a higher top speed-but I suspect the RPM range will still be higher, besides if I want high RPM and to go faster, scare hell outta myself I can ride my 4 cyl Yamaha .
