ministry of transport anual test MOT uk Where's the VIN

Took my bike for its first MOT to my local bike shop riding through torrential rain and with painful tendonitis in my left hand.. Where is the VIN they asked because they cant do the test without physicallt seeing the VIN plate. No Idea. We spend some time looking round but find nothing. So I phone BMW they didn't know either - they said its on the head stock and frame. They phoned 15 minutes later to say its behind the right hand panel. I look in manual and there it is but how do you remove this panel to see the VIN anyone any idea? Came home back in torrentail rain and will try tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads-up. My CE 04 is booked for its first MoT later this month at Wolverhampton BMW so I will contact them beforehand to preempt any problems.

Ok please tell us the answer when you get it, as Im waiting for my hand to get better before i try again.

Short of getting hold of a workshop manual, you could try working out how to remove the fairing using a diagram of the relevant part that shows the location and type of fixtures. Here is a webpage that could help:

thanks bob66 I think from your parts list, the plaque can come off, but not sure how. It is hollow and you can get a finger behnnd but did't want to pull too hard.

The plaque and BMW emblem don't need to be touched, they're just attached to the side trim panel and nothing else. I have made some progress in that I pulled off the top and rear-facing edge of the side trim panel which is attached with four push clips. A fair amount of force is required but everything is tough and well-made. At least if you break anything you know where you can buy the parts! By bending the panel back I was able to see the plate on the top of the front fork yolk but not read the whole VIN due to all the gubbins being in the way. To get a proper view of the plate, the bolts attaching the side trim panel to the side wing assembly would need to be removed so the whole side trim panel could in turn be removed.

Thanks Bob66 very useful information. Took it on Wednesday and again the bloke wanted to see the plate and he was worried about undue force on the panel but from your advice I gave it a really hard tug and it came away at the top at least. He lay on the floor with a torch while I held the panel back and apparently he got the Vin OK. It passed MOT but he warned that the front tyre was a bit worn after 2580 miles - didnt go on advisory though.

How did you get on with yours?
 
Hi MKUNES, I'm glad your CE 04 got through the MoT. My bike hasn't gone in yet - the MoT and service is booked for a week next Monday. I'll ring them this Monday to point out the potential pitfall. It's a 70 mile round trip for me along congested roads and I have to get down early to put some charge in before dropping the bike off since there is no 7 kW charger at the dealer. They had better be able to read my VIN plate!

The CE 04 is hard on front tyres as discussed in this thread: https://www.bmw-scooters.com/threads/ce-04-tire-thread-longevity-range-replacements.2760/. It's a long, low and heavy bike and, for me, the right-hand flank of the front tyre seems to wear faster than the rest of it - probably due to the number of roundabouts on my routine journeys. I get 3500 to 4000 miles out of a Michelin Pilot Road 4 Scooter front tyre, getting close to the wear markers, but your milage might vary depending on riding habits.

ok good luck. My dealer is 40 miles away and they forgot to put it on the granny charger when I went for my service so i had to wait around for a while to get at least some charge in. I went to a local non- beemer shop for my MOT.
