I am looking to gather up the parts needed to do the first oil change. From what I can see I located the filter and oil. Is there a substitute for the $20/liter BMW oil that manual is looking to scare you into getting? (SAE 5W-40, API SJ / JASO MA2, Additives (e.g. molybdenum-based) are not permissible because they can attack coated components of the engine, BMW Motorrad recommends BMW Motorrad ADVANTEC Ultimate oil.).

I see a o-ring set which I believe one is for the screen and the other is for the drain plug?

Does not seem to be very much available information for what to actually use or people that have listed what they have used.

Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S. I did stumble on the drive belt.....$411???? WOW!!! That's pretty pricey........

Hi -
I would recommend MOTUL oils . The "Scooter Power" 5-40W oil is good . The 7100 is pure synthetic , so much better quality . I use the Hi-Flo oil filters . Built as good as OEM , but cost less.
Ebay is a good source Motul oils

100% agree on Motul. I am also 100% not trying to start an oil thread, but you cannot ignore the data on Motul and its performance. Whatever they do, it works. They've been making a scooter synthetic for a few years now too.

I have a buddy that reads about oils and recommended the Motul 7100 oil you reference and I found a gallon for $51 on Amazon which is $13/liter which is reasonable. I decided go with the K&N KN-164 oil filter as I trust the brand and as a bonus it has a nut for easy removal. Now I am trying to figure out if I need to replace the the o-ring or crush washer on the drain plug. I also need to buy the ODB plug and the MotoScan app so I can reset the service light.

Has anyone used the MotoScan app? I had a wireless ODB adaptor for my car but it‘s compatible with the MotoScan app.

Hi.
What are your experiences with oils and oil filters?
I have been using BMW Advantec 5w40 oil in the scooter and HifloFiltro 164 oil filter since the beginning. They have worked well for me, I am satisfied with them. I try to change the oil every 3000 Km.

I'm a little surprised that you change the oil that often. I mean, I suppose it can't hurt anything, but it's approximately three times more often than the 10000km/6000mile interval for oil and filter changes specified in the owner's manual.

Is there a reason you decided on your 3000km interval?

Hi.
There is a guy on youtube who has a lot of videos on this topic.
The Sportztourer
Unfortunately, I can't find the video where he shows the degradation of the oils under different conditions of use. Most engine oils drastically lose their quality after 3000 km. I don't think BMW's factory recommendation would do the engine any good. Just look at the car's long life oils, which are required to be replaced every 30,000 km, to see what the inside of the engine will look like. By then, the oil is almost completely enough. You must not follow the factory specifications for cars either, because it will not end well. There, too, a maximum of 10,000 Km must be changed.
I'd rather change the oil more often than damage the engine with used oil.

Okay, thanks for the explanation.

If you are interested in learning about your oil and its performance, you can submit it for analysis. It will give you insights based in fact. For instance, it will identify elements which can indicate if a particular component of the engine is wearing at an unexpected rate. Also, it may inform you of the performance of one oil over another. You can do the same for your gear oils too if it is something you are interested in. Chevron used to do it for free (USA). Blackstone is a heavy hitter in the business. Cheap enough to do and gives you factual lab based insight.

Good point, Mike. I've done a half dozen or so tests with Blackstone over the years, particularly some with my huge oil/air-cooled V-twin in a Victory (as I made some oil-brand switches). Confirmed that I was okay with pretty much whatever I was doing, but it was nice to know.

@jokerface may not be able to use Blackstone, as he's in Slovakia, but there's probably a similar service available in Europe.

Hi.
Thanks for your comment and opinion. Then I think you follow the replacement period specified by the factory. I'm the only one who's that stupid.
Yes, I live in Slovakia, but I'm Hungarian, it doesn't matter :)

The fact is that most internal combustion engine failures are caused by excessive wear and tear of oil and filters and failure to replace them in time. I believe that there are very good tests to determine the quality of the oil, but I prefer more frequent changes. At home, I will change the oil, oil filter and air filter for exactly this scooter for €40. I have the tools for it, no problem. I don't know how much it would be at a BMW service, but it's certainly much more. And that's how I know it's definitely done.

Nobody is judging you as stupid. I have an aggressive maintenance schedule too. Mine is just shy of being wasteful. I get it. My vehicles all look and run like they’re brand new and I bet yours do too. I think you got some interest on your post as there are a lot of tenured riders here and I think your maintenance schedule is probably one of the most aggressive we’ve seen. Not good, bad, or stupid…just interesting is all. Like you, I’ll continue with what has worked for me.

My suggestion for oil tests was merely to introduce a resource that may provide data that influences your decisions to modify or keep your current maintenance regimen. Nothing more, less, or shared in the vein of critical judgement.

This is a relaxed and friendly forum, with helpful and also interested contributors. Nobody has chips on their shoulder.

Hi.
I understand, no problem, we are friends here on the forum, we drive the same machine, we just have different points of view. That's okay. Everyone has their say, that's why we're here. Sorry if I was misunderstood.

And anyway, what did you say about the Motul 7100 5w40 4t oil, do you have any experience with it? Good to read about it.

No experice with that spec, but Motul is awesome. I read someplace that consensus was their engineers were the best in the world, as characterized by their peers. Cannot go wrong IMO.
