What does this mean?

Local dealer says bring it in, we’ll plug it in, and if it’s got a problem we’ll take it to Park Lane (London) because we don’t work on them anymore since we sold it to you.

Your 12 volt battery has a problem maybe it's dead you may remove it yourself and buy a new one or have a garage do it if so you will need to get a tow truck.

I've had the occasional issue with my 12V battery running flat over winter if I haven't used my CE04 for a week or so but it's easy enough to top up and maintain the battery with a CAN-BUS compatible charger like the Optimate 4 Quad programme which plugs into the CE 04 DIN socket. I fitted an Optimate O124 lead directly to the 12V battery so that I can check its voltage at a glance and power devices that draw too much current from the bike's DIN socket, such as a small air compressor to inflate tyres. Here's a link: https://www.optimate.co.uk/battery-chargers/o124-monitor-m6-m8-eyelet/.

A few days back I experienced a disturbing issue when I plugged in my CE 04 to charge. I had left it unused for only four days. The bike briefly fired up its display; locked the charge cable in place; shut itself down and then wouldn't start up again. I measured the voltage of the 12V battery via the pig tail connected to it and was horrified to discover that it was at 7 volts! So I connected a 13.6 V power supply (an Optimate 7 in power supply mode) to the pigtail to start up the bike and removed the charging cable. However, the bike was immobilised - it had just enough power to spin the back wheel on the centrestand but could hardly move forward when off the stand. Also, regeneration, reverse drive and the steering lock were disabled. I swapped the 12V battery for a fully-charged spare but to no avail. I was concerned that I had fried the electrical system with the 13.6V power supply. The following day I bought a generic OBD scanner locally from Toolstation; plugged it in and found that there were 18 fault codes. Once the fault codes were erased everything worked as normal again, which was nice.

My bike seems to be very poor at maintaining its 12V battery. Perhaps its because I have been using the heated seat (Level 1 of 3) and the heated grips (Level 2 of 3) all the time over the last few months and the inverter can't quite keep up. I have now started carrying a spare 12V battery and the OBD scanner in the under seat compartment.

Episodes like this make me think about selling my CE 04 since my nearest BMW Motorrad dealer is over 40 congested miles away in Wolverhampton and they probably wouldn't be able to fix major issues anyway. Instead they would likely send the bike to Park Lane in London. Since my bike is long out of warranty I dread to think how much all that would cost. My local BMW dealer, Roy Pidcock, went into administration a few years after I bought my bike despite doing a roaring trade in BMWs.

Did you get it sorted Steve? I bought my bike from Park Lane, will need running in service in the next few weeks, hopefully my local dealer can service it, not super keen to ride right through London just yet.

Yes, I did. I drove it to the dealer who diagnosed 12V battery and replaced it.

It is disappointing that the dealership that sold me the thing now shrugs and says anything more complicated than a scale and polish has to be taken 55 miles away (at my expense) to a most expensive dealership in central London.

Yeah, when mine dies (it's a 2023 model but was new when I bought it a month ago) I'll likely replace it with a LiFePO4 battery. Did that with my GS years ago and it's still going strong.
