Rear Drive Oil Change Interval

Even the factory service manual doesn't say when to change it! Just says Castrol SAF-XO, 750ML. BTW, now called Castrol Syntrex...

I now have 8K miles and thinking its about time.

Any guess's???
 
The chain case oil doesn't get very dirty since it doesn't have the flood of air passing through it as the crankcase does along with the combustion byproducts so the oil stays pretty clean for a long time.
 
Castrol SAF-XO has been superseded by SAF-XJ (75-140), the only difference the XJ is for limited slip rear axels, I use Amsoil Severe Gear 75-110.
BMW would like you to believe you have to use there oil or something bad will happen. Not the case in fact that is illegal. As long as what you put in meets the same specifications you can use it. Any good quality gear oil would be fine.
What about the CVT gear box oil, that is subject to more heat and stress than the chain case, I find no schedule for change and it is a 75-90 requirement.

The gearbox uses the engine oil, they class the swigarm as gearbox so this is what you are loking at.

I think I found out why, and it explains why the C-series scoots are a bit slow off the line but haul ASS with a remapping. I was reading a Spanish review, and found out the following:

Seems that the engineers were a bit concerned with excessive rear chain drive loading with a 60HP scooter. Remember, up to this point that style had NEVER seen more that about 50HP in a production scooter; the SRV 850 and Honda Integra 700/750s both have conventional chains. So, the computer BACKS OFF the power mapping from a start, until it gets rolling fast enough to increase to full available power without overloading the chain and sprocket! That's why they have the adjuster, to compensate for expected chain stretch, and also why they want them replaced at 12,000 miles.

I guess they should have gone belt drive like their F800 has?
 
Chain stretch is a given it is going to happen. Submerged in a oil bath should eliminate nearly all wear of the chain and sprocket. That is why I do not understand the hard time of 12,000 miles. Some service people are inspecting as they should rather than hard time replacing the chain. Each rider is going to wear the chain differently depending on how they ride. They may be inspecting because BMW can not support due to no parts.
 
No, the chain and pinion gear are both available; they'll set you back about $150.00, plus guides, if necessary. The OTHER, larger gear (#6 in the diagram) is not even listed...but shouldn't wear as fast as the pinion gear.

I had the oil in the chain case changed at 1500 miles and it was in a shocking state the mechanic who did it said the oil gets initially contaminated from the new chain grease etc., my advice guys get it changed looked easy from what I saw just the cost of the fully synth oil.

now that surprises me, i had to remove a motor from a GT this summer with around 2600 miles on it and when i drained the chain case oil it was very clean.
i would expect the gearbox oil to be dirty.
