Why did you choose the BMW?

Why a BMW scooter! Actually I am a BMW fan. My first serious bike was a 1971 R75/5. At the time I was in my early 20's and living in Switzerland. This bike took me all over Europe with not even one break down or glitch in over 6 years. I still own a 1979 R 600/7 but because of a bad hip I can't ride it as much as I would like and it is getting a little old for long distance touring. When I was down at the BMW dealership to get the old bike fixed they gave me a C600 sport as a loaner. Took it out for a ride and I was pretty much sold on the bike right away. For me the key factor is riding position as I can now go for more than 2 or 3 hours without being in pain. Do I miss the clutch? Yes I must admit that if they had the same bike with a manual transmission I would buy it rather than having the automatic tranny. But the rest of the riding experience is pretty much on par with any other bikes I ever owned including my big BMW 1100 GS!

I was looking for the ultimate in urban mobility.

I grew up riding 80cc dirt bikes and an aunt bought me a Honda Elite 80 scooter when I was 12 or 13 years old. Had a blast riding it around our neighborhood. So I'm not adverse to having a scooter.

Fast forward almost 30 years. I was getting tired of the traffic in Chicago and the humongous gas bills I am paying to fill up my SUV just to drive 9 miles to work in city traffic. My administrative assistant and a co-worker we riding scooters to work and raved about the convenience. We have a 50cc Vespa at our vacation home, so I decided I'd look at bigger CC scoots and on a whim I bought a Vespa GTS 300 last summer. I immediately fell in love and woke up the passion of riding. I put about 1800 miles on it in a few months. However, as I started riding more and more, I quickly figured out that the Vespa wasn't really going to cut it for longer, higher speed rides. I needed a more serious bike.

I kind of wanted to upgrade to a motorcycle like a Ducati Hypermotard or a Multistrada, but I really didn't want to deal with having to shift. I also didn't want an ignorant amount of power either. I wanted something fast and sporty, but I have no desire to do burnouts and pop wheelies. I also didn't want to fiddle with a clutch in stop and go traffic. Only bike I could really find was the Honda NC700, but I thought it was a little bland looking as far as bikes go. The VFR1200 just seemed like too much bike for my daily needs (and expensive). All the other manufacturers are behind the curve on offering DCT options.

I saw the BMW scooters and started doing some research on them and it seemed to have what I wanted. Plenty of power, sporty looking, heated grips/seat, and generally a sexy looking bike. The C600 fit the bill for urban commuting. I made the mistake of test driving one on a Friday for about an hour and brought it home that Monday.

I've been totally satisfied with the purchase. It is truly a work horse for me. It can handle the weekend runs to the farmers market, my 9 to 5 commute, and long leisurely rides to no where or I can hop in the fast lane and hold my own.

Yes this off the subject but since you mentioned that your wife was against you having a motorcycle (as many wives are), I am posting this old ad. This has been around for years but it is still good.

Ain't that the truth... My son also rides a 2013 BMW F700GS and they way he always was bragging about his BMW influenced me a bit, too. I did have to convince myself that the reliability would be there. Only have had it a couple of weeks now and with the weather haven't gotten out there as much as I'd like. But I am already convinced I made the right decision.
