Carpuride and power

Hi all, picking up my new (ex demo) 400 GT on Monday. After reading the various comments about the BMW navi app and satnav not being great. I’ve ordered a Carpuride. Now I’ve seen various options for powering it:

- USB Port
- Direct to battery
- using spare socket under the fairing around the handlebars.

Chances are 95% of the time I’ll be able to leave the Carpuride on the bike as it will be securely parked. Do I need to mess about with getting an extra cable for the extra socket and plumbing it in or does the USB option work just fine. Cheers

A couple of months ago I entered the world of CarPlay/Android Auto, putting a (much cheaper, much less sophisticated) Aoocci C6 unit on my Royal Enfield Meteor 350. I mention this because I'm powering that unit with the Meteor's stock, ignition-only-on, USB-A port, and that unit works fine being powered that way (even though Aoocci asserts that USB power is for "testing only," or something like that).

My opinions on your options:

1) With direct-to-battery, would you have to remember to turn the unit off each time you shut down the bike (to avoid draining the battery)? If so, not very convenient.

2) I use the otherwise unused satnav connector to power some LED modules up front. These are not driving lights, but rather just extremely bright but low wattage conspicuity modules. I have a write-up on this -- pics, captions, links -- in my 400 gallery, starting with this image:


There are about 20 pics on this, most of which are irrelevant to your situation, because they're about cable routing, etc.

In any event, using that connector has worked flawlessly for me. The power to that satnav connector goes off 60 seconds after you shut off the bike.

3) With the USB port, I'm assuming that you're talking about the USB port in the right-side cubby. (From your other thread, it looks as if you're getting a '25 model. I assume that those still have the port(s) in the cubby, although I don't know whether BMW has changed from a USB-A to a USB-C connector.)

In any case, if you decide to go that route I would recommended adding an external USB port, as opposed to using what I'd call an internal, i.e., inside the cubby, port.

When I was on a week+ tour of the Alps in 2023, I used the internal port on a C 400 X to power my GoPro; see the second pic at https://billanddot.com/Ultimate-Alps-Tour/. This meant that I had to mush the cable in a corner of the cubby door; this is a method that worked, but I would not want to do that on my own bike, and on a permanent basis.

Instead, on my former '22 and on my current '23 C 400 GT, I added an external port on the dash. You can read about that mod in my gallery, starting with this image:


There are about half-a-dozen pics on that.

Note that the 3BR Panel TAPP that I bought for the '22 had a 12V requirement, and so I tapped into a 12V source on the bike, as described in those images. When I ordered another one -- when I got my '23 -- 3BR had changed the power input for the Panel TAPP (https://3brpowersports.com/products/tapp™-panel-mount-adapter) to a plain old USB-A plug. So I did not have to tap a 12V source from the bike, and just drilled a bigger hole in the back of the cubby and then just plugged in the Panel TAPP to a USB-A port in the cubby:

In any case, I've been powering my GoPro for three years on a 400 using a Panel TAPP (and had used that product on a couple of bikes before that, too -- 3BR makes good stuff).

The power to the cubby ports shuts off shortly after the bike is turned off, but I don't know the exact time involved. Oh, and if BMW has switched to USB-C in the cubby, then you would need a small USB-A-to-USB-C adapter, of course, if you used the Panel TAPP.

Those, it seems to me, are your options. I hope some of my response helps you out, and perhaps gives you some ideas. Good luck on your project ... and your new ride!

Hey, thank you for such a detailed response. Looks like it would be best to have a tinker and look for the unused satnav socket.

I think it is now USB c and from memory it is now in the left cubby.

I’m going to give it a go with the supplied mount and see how that goes. If it doesn’t work I imagine I’ll be looking at Wunderlich for something that sits above the TFT screen
 
I bought the CHIGEE AIO-5 Lite. I connected mine to the ignition 12VDC line.

1) Sorry to be a little dense here, but did you wind up actually mounting an external TPMS sensor on the front wheel?

2) You have any pics of your final mounting system of the Chigee display unit?

I revisited the Carpuride site, and I'm still not clear, regarding their suggested/supplied mounting system. Do you have a link to the Carpuride web page, for the product you bought, and also perhaps provide some insight regarding their mounting method?

If whatever they suggested/supplied doesn't work out for you, I have some suggestions you might consider.

1) As I posted a few months back, I added part of a "shelf" product behind the windscreen, and put a RAM ball on it: https://www.bmw-scooters.com/thread...windscreen-then-added-ram-ball-to-shelf.3375/

I am extremely pleased with how that came out.

Unfortunately, I have no idea whether that will work for the '25 C 400 GT, as BMW changed the windscreen mount. with the new multi-position setup.

2) I did some quick searching this morning in AliExpress, and found some brackets that claim to be compatible with the '25. These appear to be all the same product, but with differing prices and shipping costs:




3) If you were to get one of those with the 12mm shaft, you might want to then consider getting a RAM-compatible ball that is suitable for clamping on such a shaft.

For instance, I'm talking about something like these BRCOVAN clamps for small shafts:


Although those are inexpensive, they are very well made and also look sharp -- I have three (larger-shaft) BRCOVAN clamps on my Meteor 350 as we speak. They're better and cheaper than the equivalent RAM-brand products, IMO.

Once you start with RAM-compatible products, the world's pretty much your oyster, in terms of configuration options.

4) You might also want to consider the use of a FANAUE product, such as this anti-theft double-socket arm:


This is a very nice product, and I'm using that one on my Meteor, with my cheapo Aoocci unit:

(Aoocci itself supplied an anti-theft double-socket arm, which instead of a sunken hex surround uses an anti-theft Torx head, i.e., a Torx head with a prong in the center. I would've used that except it was too short for me to be able to center the display unit, so I went with the FANAUE product. I have a LOT of RAM-compatible goodies lying around. None of this is theft-proof, of course, but then nothing is, nothing will stop a gang of perps from lifting a bike itself into a van, etc.; the idea is simply deterrence, not make grabbing the display too easy, and so forth. Oh, and RAM itself makes some locking devices that replace the knobs on double-socket arms, and I even have one of those in one of my boxes of RAM products.)

5) If anyone wants to experiment with cable routing, e.g., perhaps before using cable ties, I can heartily recommend Nearockle silicone cable straps:


These are very stretchy and very easy to insert into themselves. If you look closely, you can see that I use some of these on the Meteor, to make a compact bundle of excess wires. I also use these, on a permanent basis, to manage the USB cable when I hook up a GoPro on either bike. I've order that packet a couple of times now from Amazon.

6) I also took a look at WunderlichUSA this morning, with my pretending that I have a '25 C 400 GT. I didn't really find anything that seemed appropriate, but perhaps I wasn't searching properly:


In any event, good luck with however you wind up mounting the unit, and please keep us updated on your solution.

I did mount the TPMS sensors on the standard valve stem. There was .75mm clearance with is pretty tight.

I have not replaced the stem with the CHIGEE stem you sent me. BTW, THANK YOU!!

Measuring the stock BMW base of the flange to the top of the stem is 13.5mm while the CHIGEE is 12mm with a difference of 1.5mm between the 2 stems. This will increase the clearance to 2.25mm from the .75mm……not a lot but much better.

Here are a couple of photos of my CHIGEE setup. It’s mounted on the Wunderlich bracket. Quality and fitment is dead on unlike the AliExpress version. Experience based on assisting a friend. I had to bend the mount tabs for the correct angle, etc.

The CHIGEE has silicone grommets in the 4 corners of the mount point to absorb vibrations. The unit vibrates too much so I used stainless to sandwich the grommets to minimize the vibration. The movement of the screen from the vibrations made the screen unreadable.

I hope this information helps!

What model number Carpuride did you get?

By the way -- revisiting your month-old post -- I came across a page today at Chigee's site, https://support.chigee.com/portal/e...-notice-r1250rs-2018-r1200-rt-c400-harley-975 , which states:

For BMW C400gt and BMW C400X: Neither internal nor external tire pressure sensor can be installed on these models.

I was following the links around Chigee's site, such as https://www.chigee.com/products/aio5-play-for-bmw, https://www.chigee.com/pages/aio5-play-bmw-compatibility, and https://www.chigee.com/products/cgrc-remote-bmw, and I eventually wound up on the page above.

My guess is that the folks at Chigee are not as comfortable as you are, with the tiny clearance between the external sensor and the front wheel's disc caliper enclosure.

If it's still working okay for you, and works okay with your next change of brake pads, more power to you. Just a heads up for the rest of us, though.
 
I may have the BMW ones installed at my next service. I got spoiled with the FOBOs I had on my spyder.
If you're talking about inside-the-wheel sensors, I would love to hear a report of this.

Tech "Phad Motorrad" in Thailand -- https://www.youtube.com/@phadmotorrad531/videos -- has done that, and I've communicated with him a few times on WhatsApp. However, my local shop wants nothing to do with this potential farkle.

(BTW, in case you haven't noticed this info in some of my posts by now, or in my gallery, I have a FOBO on the rear wheel on my '23 C 400 GT.)
 
It is the internal ones. I hope they can do it when I go in next month. It’s funny you have it on the rear. That was the most important one on the spyder. That was a tough one to check. I’ll let you know how it goes.
 
Got the connector for the 3 wire plug to get power to the Carpuride. I got it from Amazon. They sure are some thin wires.
