about to turn over 18,000 miles on my 13 month old GT

So far I have put on a set of tires at 12.000 miles and had a couple of check up services. The dealer inspected the chain, but didn't have time to check the transmission belt at 16,800 miles. He suggested we wait till the 24,000 mile service when they have to check the valves. Anyone else out there have this kind of mileage on their C650's? Anyone else already put a belt on it?

7,000 miles and my rear tire looks new but the front tire was completely trashed and replaced...

Yes it's true. I like to use all the rubber. I've only scraped the undercarriage a few times. I agree on the front, it seems to wear faster than the rear does. On the little classic scooters I've gone until the tread was totally gone. But on the heavy and fast Beemer, I've since changed what I find acceptable. Especially with pillion.

The Tmaxes all do the same thing and use the same sized tires front and back. The hot set-up in Europe is putting the OEM Bridgestone for the Tmax in BACK, and the OEM Bridgestone for the Burgman 650 (same nominal size - wider tread with a different radius) in the FRONT. Evened-out all the tire wear and handled better! Bridgestone then came out in 2011 with the SC tire line (Europe ONLY) with the EXACT SAME front tire for the Burgman650, BMW C650GT and C600Sport, and the Tmax 530. It's worth a TRY!

I have about 9800 miles on my Gt and not looking forward to the 12000 mile service So the dealer wasn't concerned about the belt or the chain not being replaced at the 12000 mile service did he write that down on the service receipt so you can prove that in case something drastic happen between now and the 24000 mi service. I'm glad to hear that he feels confident about the above, at 24000 mi I could understand a major service and not at 12000 Miles as suggested by BMW

Vago,

18k in 13 months is impressive. I just turned 6k in 8 months (although that includes a Cleveland winter) and now splitting time between a couple bikes.....although my C650GT is my preferred ride most of the time.

The other day I was out for a back road ride and although I wasn't consciously riding aggressively, I slid my front tire twice. When I got home, I checked the tire carefully and found it appeared there was something on the side tread. It was smooth and slick and seemed to come off with cleaning. Maybe they waxed the tires as I know the bike did a stint in the dealer showroom. 900 miles on the tires.

If the GT were my only bike, I'd be right up there with you. I've been averaging about 18,000 miles a year too, but divided between my K1200LT and the C650GT. I've had mine now for 11 months and it has a little over 8,500 miles. I bought the K1200LT in the summer of 1999. It is currently in the shop for its 180,000 mile service.

Nah, the longest day I ever did was an inadvertant 803 miles back in the early 90s. By the time I pulled into Wendover, NV for the night, I was an incoherent, blathering idiot. I've been able to click off 700 mile days several days in a row (did it as recently as 2011) but that seems to be about my limit. I keep debating whether doing 1,000 miles in 24 hours is REALLY worth the bragging rights. Something I'd have to think about long and hard.

I had a sleepy pullover on a cross country car trip in Wendover. As an aviator I lost my marbles when I realized just where I was and what used to be there.

I agree with you Jamie about iron butt rides, too much for me. A Vespa club member did the 1,000 miles to Vancouver in one go, just to take a day of rest and then begin a 10 day time trial across the country, he's on day 3 just now,. Crazy Bollocks, but he claimed to only have that much vacation time left so he kinda had to if he was to make to Canadian start. It's the Scooter Cannonball for bikes 250cc and smaller. Otherwise I'd totally take the Beemer and glide in style.

Maybe next time the race is held I could go as a support vehicle or a camera platform, that would be fun.

On a side note... after 11 months and 8,000 miles I decided it was time to finally wash and wax the GT...

My request to check the belt was in writing, and his suggestion to wait for the big service in there also . . . I'm not expecting a problem with the dealer . . . I bought the Beamer mostly due to the reputation of the dealer .. . fingers crossed .. .

It's hard not to even up the mileage on my 650GT or the K1100LT. I tend to alternate use on them unless it's a shopping trip to the market then the GT does the job since it can carry so much stuff with the top box on. It's a lot easier to load/unload than the LT with its saddlebags. On the other hand the LT is more fun in the twisties. Decisions, decisions. I think I'm about to complicate things even more with a late '90s R1100RT added to the stable.

Been a while since I have been on this forum. Took the GT in for the major service at just over 26,000 miles back in January. They checked the valves (on spec), replaced the drive chain but the sprockets were good. The belt was fine with no signs of wear, but the rollers needed replacement and had been put in backwards from the factory (as was common on some machines). I'm about to turn over 29,000, but I am not putting the miles on it like I was since I no longer commute 70 miles a day. Love the bike, and it seems that much of the factory 'replacement' intervals for various parts is over kill. My dealer said to bring it back at 36,000 . . . or wait. The drive chain had a spot in it that was stiff. The dealer said that the chain is an o-ring chain and the lube that the chain runs in probably doesn't penetrate the o-rings. 26,000 + miles on a drive chain is really good mileage.
