Anyone else having trouble refueling?

I’ve only had to fill up my C650 GT 3 times since I got it but I have to ask if anyone else has trouble with the trap in the fuel filler neck causing gas to splash out when filling up. Some pump nozzles kind of “stutter” when you try to keep the flow slow, some are either off or full on (no in between) and when I find one that is fairly easy to control it seems to take forever to fill up at the rate of flow that won’t splash out. When I am keeping an eye on the filler I can’t see the meter on the pump to see how much I’ve put in.
I’m half tempted to just get a gas can that holds 3 ½ gallons (since my low fuel warning comes on with about ½ gallon left in the tank), keep it full at the house and just use that to refuel.

Totally have the same issue on my C600. You need to use the smallest amount of pressure on the gas handle and even then it splashes out. Annoying.

Just curious here, are you getting the nozzle all the way in? I almost always have to play around with it, rotate it clockwise or counter for a bit, then it drops all the way in another inch or so.

Now that you mention it, no. I hold it above the trap and maybe that's my problem. If the nozzle fits through an opening in the bottom of the trap that would make things a lot simpler. I will certainly check that out, thanks!

Yes, I have the same problem. If I get the nozzle all the way in, I can only fill the tank to somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 full, depending on ability to control the speed of the flow, so, I do the dance of pulling the nozzle almost all the way out and then coaxing in additional fuel to full. Yes, I spill some as a result. Some places with high flow, I spill a lot more.

Weird, I've never spilled gas due to overflow. Grey Hound has point, I too have to move/turn the nozzle to find the extra hole deeper pushing the nozzle further in, almost sealing the gap where you place the gas. It also fills it full, but I do not get off the bike and keep balanced while filling her up.

Every hose nozzle I've poked in my GT fit easily through the hole in the tank neck. When my bike needs more than half a tank I usually have the nozzle wide open and gradually withdraw the nozzle as the tank fills. I always fill the tank so the fuel level is about 1/2" deep over the hole in the tank neck. Never spilled a drop in nearly 6000 miles of riding the scooter.

I do put the bike on the center stand so that the tank can fill completely fill and not trap air. I ALWAYS get off the bike when fueling. About thirty years ago I saw a fellow filling a motorcycle who managed to slop some gas on a hot engine and catch fire. When he jumped off the bike he knocked it over causing gas to flood out of the tank making the inferno much larger. The guy did get some serious burns but the station attendants had the fire out before the fire burned the place down. Just remember you can't get clear of the bike as fast if you're on it while fueling.

Same problem for me. I make a mess half the time myself and I do it very slowly. Was in Sicily the other week and there was an attendant filling up, he did it in no time without spilling a drop. My jaw dropped and I handed him the money without saying a word.

No problem here. I jam the nozzle in all the way and hold it wide open till it stops by itself. Then I back it out till the tip of the nozzle is just resting on the lip of the filler and hold it wide open again till it stops. Never spilled a drop or had it splash so I'm at a bit of a loss how you're seeing the problems you're having.

And yes, I'm off the scooter and it is on the centerstand.

This has all been interesting. I admit that I never looked directly down the filler neck, partly due it's forward facing angle. I also put the bike on it's center stand for fueling. If the nozzle can be inserted past the filler neck that would be very helpful. I'm just used to my previous bikes fuel tanks where once the cap was off there was no obstruction. I looked back at the Rider's Manual to see if I may have missed something but it doesn't really mention anything other than the max fill level and the recommendation that the bike be on the center stand.

Again, I'm happy that other forum members have figured this out (or never had the issue) and I'll just chalk this up to a "D'OH!" moment.

Tip I learned here and works well for me is staying on the bike when refueling. Do have to be sure I get the fuel nozzle all the way in but staying seated easier than getting off and putting the bike on the center stand. To each his or her own. But works for me.

I haven't tried this either. I recall the first couple of times fidgeting around, but I assumed it was all the way in. Next fill up, I'll try a bit harder to get it deeper (wow... that's what she said)

Hey it worked! I fiddled around a bit and the nozzle went further down. No spillage! Great. Thanks folks.

Glad to hear it worked out well Renegader. The issue I've had (granted I've only filled it up once....the bike has only 94 miles on it) is that during its first fill-up, the digital meter only went to 3/4's full. No, I didn't have it on the center stand which I'll try next time. Oh, and I just took delivery of my scooter two Saturdays ago....I purchased it brand new from a dealer in Bakersfield CA for a ridiculously (!!!!) low price. I basically stole it the legal way.

I have followed this thread for quite awhile and I must say many of the posts amaze me. Is it possible a relatively intelligent (I mean after all you bought a BMW) group of people can have problems trouble shooting the simplest of things like refueling? Come on people, it's not that difficult.

I stick it all the way but at lowest fill rate. Has always worked fine. Once it kicks off I pull it a it and get a little more in
