CE 04 Aux. Power Harness & Installation

Hey guys thought I would put up a few images of an Aux battery harness for our CE’s.

For those using the 12 volt power plug
- On the CE 04 console, be advised it will only handle 3-4 amps then shuts down from over-current. The port is primarily designed to power say a small GPS, recharge helmets or phone. If you happen to trip the 12 volt power plug, by restarting the bike it restores power again. Not sure if it’s a re-settable breaker or possibly Can-bus is powering it down from over-load. Regardless it is not powered by the multi-fuse bank under the side cover. For these same reasons if you’re attempting to power heated jackets or in my case a 12 volt air pump, you’ll need an Aux power hookup that is powered directly from the 12 volt battery. Keep in mind the 12 volt batteries primary purpose is to power the process and close the HV battery contacts. One the bike is up and running, the DC to DC down-converter powers all the 12 volt accessories, lights, display etc.

A word of Caution - You “Should Not” attempt to charge or worse jump the 12 volt battery - From this Aux power hookup since there is a chance you could damage the bikes DC to DC down-converter which charges the 12 volt battery and powers the bikes 12 volt accessories from the high voltage battery. The problem exists because the bikes processor automatically monitors the 12 volt battery even when the ignition is “Off”, therefore if you apply a charger outputting 14-16 volts, it may feed back to the DC down-converter with a chance it may pull up an “Error code” disabling the bike, or worse damaging the DC to DC down-converter. If your battery become discharged (Display remains off) you’ll need to remove the single screw on the right side, then pull the cover loose from its clips. Next pull the two internal covers off to revel the battery terminals. Unhook one of the terminals from the battery (protect it) then apply the charging current direct to the battery “Itself” only.

The Harness I used is available almost everywhere - It comes with loop connectors on one end and an SAE connector on the other. Make sure your harness is equipped with a fuse as well which protects the connector from short circuiting the battery and the possibility of pulling up a 12 volt battery errors. I installed a 10 amp fuse in the harness which is ample for my heated jacket or more important my 12 volt air pump. If your powering a jacket and pants you might consider a 15 amp fuse.

Installation is straight forward - First remove the exterior panel by removing a 25 Tork screw. Next remover the battery cover. You’ll have to remove two other Torks towards the rear to remove the battery / fuse connector. (you might want to prep under the panels with a white washcloth to catch run-away hardware from dropping in the bike. Finally remove the plastic cable retainer clip on the battery itself. I ran my harnesses SAE output connector aft and tie-wrapped it to the frame allowing it to exit aft under the seat. If you like the harness can be ran forward around mid-way of the seat as well. positioned aft, I found there is a small recess under the seat which holds the connector in place when not in use.

About a decade ago - I changed all my bikes over to SAE connectors for battery charging or power accessories so I have one connector type for all bikes and uses. - Mike

For those who tour on the back roads like I do - Here's a light weight compact air pump I stole from one of my BMW I-3's, there are a number ofthese pumps available on line.

The pump is very powerful (5 amps & reason I installed the aux harness). Unlike a lithium powered pump, it will run as long as needed to get me home. While there are some good choices of lithium powered air pumps available (on this forum) Myself, I've always disliked the idea of storing "Made in China Lithium Accessories" iie battery jumpers, flashlights pumps etc. in my bikes, cars trucks (fire) for safety reasons.

I have even more concerns storing a lithium device in the CE 04 trunk since it like an inferno on hot days between road heat and the heat from the radiator circulating aft making the trunk an oven of sorts. - As the images show, the pump has around a 15 foot power cable and a 24" standard screw on air valve tube and only weighs around 6-8 oz.

Great, just what I was looking for. Only just ordered my CE04, selling my 1200 GS. I'm also used to having a heated jacket and gloves for winter commuting so would like to install my harness to the CE04. But from the picture it is rather hard to make up (probably also because I don't have the bike with me just yet, hopefully somewhere next week) where exactly the 12V battery is located. Which panel is it, that I need to remove to get to the battery exactly?
On my GS I have the harness installed with a 10 amp fuse and a coax DC connector, not the SAE connector. And I also use that to connect my optimate battery charger. But you are saying I should not do this with the CE04 if I'm reading that correctly? Is it different than with a GS?
That also looks like a mighty fine windscreen. Could you tell me what brand/type it is?
Anyway, new to this forum, new to electric riding, new to the CE04, so lots to learn, any help is always appreciated!

PS: I’m guessing it is the panel on the right hand side, sticking out behind the storage compartment…
