Does 2017 C 650 GT have the hydraulic chain tensioner?

I'm thinking of buying my 6th C 650 GT from a seller in Alabama. This is a gorgeous, black 2017 with just over 3,000 miles. Seems a tad pricey at $7,800 (I bought a 2019 in South Carolina last year for $7,000), but I don't know how firm the price is.

Does anyone know if 2017 models have the hydraulic chain tensioner?

If anyone is interested, below is a list of enhancements for Gen 2.0 models (2016+) published by BMW. It doesn't cite the chain tensioner.

Mike

ENHANCEMENTS TO GEN 2.0: 2016+ MODELS

New suspension and damping set-up for an ideal compromise between sport and comfort.

In addition to ABS, now also ASC is standard for maximum safety when accelerating.

Completely new, dynamic design for the C 650 Sport.

Detailed stylistic fine-tuning for the C 650 GT.

New silencer. The new exhaust system is made of stainless steel as before, but does not have a front silencer. Fitted only with a rear silencer, it now offers a particularly full and sonorous sound and dynamic new look.

New instrument dial design.

New handlebar trim elements with chrome applications.

New, higher-quality surfaces (graining effects).

Automatic daytime riding light.

Revised kinematics of the center stand for easier use.

New rider assistance system Side View Assist (SVA) for the C 650 GT.

New paint finishes for the C 650 Sport: Valencia Orange metallic matt, Light White non-metallic and Black Storm metallic.

New paint finishes for the C 650 GT: Black Storm metallic, Frozen Bronze metallic and Light White non-metallic.

TECHNOLOGY

New CVT set-up and revised clutch linings for more dynamic clutch engagement and a more spontaneous set-off response (faster off the line). Power transmission from directly integrated CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) which underwent extensive adaptations for use in the new C 650 Sport and the new C 650 GT.

Softer springs and optimized clutch linings used in the centrifugal clutch.

Powerful 2-cylinder in-line engine with new set-up, optimized CVT and new exhaust system.

In order to achieve a low mounting position and therefore a low center of gravity, the engine has a cylinder bank that is tilted forward by 70 degrees. The characteristic sound and low level of vibration are due to the 90-degree crankpin offset, 270-degree ignition spacing and two counterbalance shafts powered by spur gears.

The sophisticated cooling concept to BMW Motorrad standards ensures optimum thermal balance in the 2-cylinder in-line engine. Here, coolant flows transversely through the cylinder head, entering at the front of the cylinder head on the hot exhaust side. The intensive cooling effect rapidly dissipates the heat precisely at the point of maximum thermal stress, thereby ensuring excellent temperature compensation. The aluminum radiator with plastic water containers and integrated thermostat has the same high-performance radiator network as is used in BMW motorcycles. Due to its high degree of efficiency and excellent air intake and through-flow, a relatively small surface is sufficient for operationally reliable heat dissipation in all conditions.

Carburation of the 4-valve engine with two overhead camshafts is taken care of by an electronic fuel injection system. Meanwhile oil is supplied by a dry sump system with a dual oil pump, and an efficient cooling concept ensures optimum thermal balance in the 2-cylinder engine. Engine mapping was redefined for use in the new C 650 Sport and the new C 650 GT with a view to satisfying the requirements of the EU4 pollutant class.

In addition to increased roller weights, the transmission ratio spread of the CVT has been increased from 2.42 to 2.95. The long CVT ratio is now 0.82 instead of 1.00. The gear reduction ratio between the CVT output shaft and driven shaft has been shortened from 2.72 to 3.28. In addition to a more spontaneous set-off response, this also makes for an increased top speed (180 rather than 175 km/h), or 111 mph).

Yes it's supposed to. The question comes up if it was a 2016. Because my 2016 C650 Sport did not have the hydraulic tensioner as I guess it was an early production unit. But to be sure, you can look for the oil feed line that comes out of the block near the oil filter....or request the seller take a picture of that area of the bike before you show up.

This thread/post has a pic, shows what it looks like, and where it is. If the link below does work correctly, post 3 has the pic attached.

Ah, thank you. Forgot I came across that info years ago. In fact, I saved a photo of what you described, which I'll share here.

Doubling down on what zx10guy said.

By model year 2017 all c650s have a hydraulic tensioner. It's the first half of 2016 production that don't have them, but I've yet to pinpoint when the change got fully implemented on the assembly line, as all of my 2016s came with the less-good tensioner, with build dates of 12/2015, 03/2016, 04/2016.

@Delray - I guess I beat you to the 2016 GT I picked up outside Atlanta last month. :)

Thanks for verifying info on the hydraulic tensioner.

I don't recall looking into a '16 near Atlanta recently, but it's possible if it was white. The '16 white is only matched by the '13 red. Last week I almost bought a red 2013 on CycleTrader. Had a matching red BMW top case and not a scratch for $3,500. I thought the price was a typo. I was the first person to inquire and it was mine to buy. But I told the seller to let another lucky buyer have it because of logistics (in Chicago), the mechanical tensioner and mileage (17,900). Half an hour later, I checked CycleTrader again and it was gone.

Bummer on the 2013, but if logistics weren't a factor, I'd have too many bikes. :)

I just figured if you were on the hunt for a c650 again, you might've seen the black 2016 I snagged in Georgia for $3,000. It has a couple minor issues (gas spring that holds the seat up when opened needs replacing, locking mechanism for the seat requires a rebuild), and a minor scratch on one front cowl, but otherwise seems great.

And by the way, you might be right that the GT might suit me better than my beloved Sport. Upon purchase, I rode it 550 miles back to my brother's place in Virginia in a single day (my longest single-day trip), and didn't feel nearly as fatigued as I do from long rides on the Sport. I also noticed that the wider fairing cuts down on the wind that passes over your thighs at speed, which is where I get coldest during winter riding on my Sport, and is hardest to get warmed back up when I stop for gas/coffee/stretching.

I'm going to add slipstream deflectors to the GT for even more wind protection, and see how deep into the cold months I can push my weekly commute from NYC to VA this coming winter.

That's quite a commute. I have a GIVI windscreen for the GT. It's taller and gives better wind protection than the OEM screen. That is aided by two side panels that reduce wind on the hands.

Let me know if you're interested in buying the screen or hand panels or both. They're just sitting in my closet. Everything fits in place using existing bolts on the bike, although for the side panels, I had to source longer bolts at Home Depot to accomodate the added thickness of the panels. I have those four bolts.

I'm a bit jealous of you GT owners with all the different accessories that are not available for my Sport.

Anyways, on the topic of riding in the cold, something you might want to consider is heated gear. I finally got heated gear a couple of years ago and it's been a total game changer. I now wonder why I went for so long without buying heated gear. I have a heated undershirt I would wear that keeps me plenty warm. I have it plugged into a splitter that connects to an accessory power jack that's installed on the "dash" of my scooter. The other connector on the splitter is for my heated gloves. Not only do they block the wind very well, they also heat my hands. Add the heated grips and heated seats, it's extended my riding deep into the winter.

The 2016 GT I picked up is my first, my other 2 are Sports (1 running, the other with a wounded output shaft I'm trying to figure out how to rebuild without exceeding replacement cost).

I have to admit that part of the reason I wanted a GT was a chance to play with all the accessories. For example, when I ordered a 2nd top case from Europe, I also opted to pick up a set of the OEM crash protectors, the slipstream protectors, and the aspherical mirrors -- because I finally had a bike I could hang them on. :)

Thanks for the tip on heated gear. It's my experience on winter rides on the Sport that my legs get cold first, followed by my hands (thanks to heated grips), then my core. I've got great gloves, and finally got some winter-grade trousers that I'll be putting to the test on the GT. If those 2 don't get the job done, then I'm finally going to bite the bullet and go full electric long johns.

@Delray...I'm jealous the black plastics on yours looks basically new. Well done!!!

What are you asking for the windshield and side wind deflectors?
Just sold both, sorry.

I've had good success with a Mother's product called Back to Black. It's in a red container labeled "trim and plastic restorer." But in fairness, I probably wouldn't buy a C 650 GT or big scooter with badly faded plastic. To me that says the owner didn't give a sh#t -- and that's not a bike I want. I take care of my two-wheeled wonders and keep them immaculate.

That's exactly right. It doesn't take much to ensure your bike looks new with a little bit of care. My 2016 C650 Sport is still looking close to showroom new. I say close because there are a couple of scratches on the the black plastic next to the fuel filler that the previous owner created. But the bike still looks very good to the point that my dealer's service writer when leaving me a message that they received my bike from the tow company proceed to say the bike is "extremely clean....phenomenally clean."

I'm that way with pretty much every thing I own. My 2013 135i is still showroom clean as is my 2004 ZX-10R. A bike that's coming up on being 20 years old still looks like it pretty much just rolled out of the dealership.

Part of keeping the bikes looking good is proper cleaning and having all of them garage kept.

I rode my Honda SH300i through the winters in Geneva, Switzerland, and learned from the colleagues there that a great winter accessory to keep warm is the 'tent'. Everyone who rides in the winter in Geneva, but also cities like Paris, uses one. Major brand is Tucano Urbano:

BMW has one as an accessory from what I seem to recall. Any ideas as to where I can get one here in the US? It seems all the cool accessories are all overseas for our scooters.

Edit: They do make one for the Sport. Part # is 77 31 8 527 011. Looks like a $300 price tag.

@zx10guy -- Here's a listing on eBay for a more manageable price for the Tucano Urbano Cessie linked -- if you wishlist the item, the seller might send you a special offer for a little less off the ask (they did for me).

I was going to install one on my Piaggio BV350 years ago, but bought my first c600 and sold the BV before I could get around to it.

@Cessie76-- thanks for the suggestion, and reminding me those are an option.

If you're still looking I have it listed on the local CL for 8.000. Probably as low as I will go. But it's a 19 with about 5500 on it. What happened to the blue one you just bought?

That is very tempting since I know you take phenomenal care of your bikes and I really miss my 2019 (I sold it to buy a white Burgman 400 for my annual summer Fly 'n Ride to Rochester NY -- the B400 is fantastic). Plus this is the perfect time of year for a long ride in Fall weather. All that said, I paid $7k last year for the '19 I bought in Charleston SC with the same miles you have, so your low-end price of $8k, while fine and fairly valued, is high for what I would want to pay. On the other hand, this Saturday is a milestone birthday, so I've been thinking of doing something big for myself .... ;o)
