You could have made a turn to the opposite curb , while staying slightly up hill then backed to the behind curb, then a turn down hill.

Yes I could have. I could also have backed the bike downhill 100' or so and backed into a driveway then turned downhill but once in a while one misjudges the turning radius needed. I did just that. One doesn't always get it right even with years of riding. The moral of the story, take a moment to think out what you want to do and don't get in a hurry.

Yeah, coulda, woulda, shoulda. Unfortunately when I realized the bike wasn't going to clear the curb it was a bit too late for corrective action. Oddly enough If I'd hit the front brake firmly in the sharp left turn, the bike would have tipped itself to the right which would have saved the day. It would have helped it I'd realized the upcoming difficulty ahead of time. Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug.
