Elephant Hunting

I just noticed something about the new Metzeler FeelFree tire we mounted this week; something I used to know but had forgotten. Along the outer edge of the tread of a brand new Metzeler tire there is a parade of "Elephants." There was an article about this in the BMW Motorcycle Owner's News if I recall correctly.

You can get an idea of how aggressively you ride by looking at these elephants. For example, all of the elephants on my front tire have been decapitated (only their bodies remain). Although the elephants on the rear tire are all "scuffed" they are still there because I haven't had much opportunity to do any "sporty" riding since I installed the tire. After a little over 200 miles today they're still easily visible.

There are no elephants left on the tires on my K1200LT, however. I'd been riding that one a LOT since the scooter had broken down over Labor Day weekend.

Sounds kind of fun, I never looked at my old OEM tires much until they got worn. I didn't see anything on them. My new Michelen Power Pure tires now have about 1000 miles on them and are properly scuffed to the edge of the tread, no nubbins left. The Michelen on the rear seems to have an unusually thick or deep tread with a lot more rubber than grooves. I'm hoping they will give more mileage than the originals did.

Don't know if there is anything similar on the diablos. I'm sure they would be intact if so.

They used to give out those little blue elephant key chains at Americade if you got your tires installed there. :)

I got my blue elephant at one of the nationals in the late 80's or early 90's. I had 2 but I gave 1 away, I always leave the one I have under my seat
