Favorite Bike Other Than Your "Step Over"

Ok, you may be asking, "What is he talking about....a Step Over??" I am not a fan of the maxi-scooter name, and these types of bikes are not step-through designs. So, "Step Over" is probably better than "Leg Over", that we use with a more traditional bike, seems like it might fit.

Anyhow, I am trying to figure out what other bike I might want in my garage. After all, not every bike can do every thing we want it to do. My C650GT is great for the type of touring I do, but once in awhile I feel the need to go off road and get a little dirty. Nowadays they call that "dual purpose".

For those times when I want to dual purpose my ride, my current inclination is to get a BMW F800GS, or if I want to save a few bucks with a different quality level, a KLR 650.

What else do you own and what do you use it for.....Or, what is on your wish list?

I'm working on a fire breathing 2-stroke 240cc Lambretta, expected to be more than 30 hp with water injection. That damn project was costing too much so it was buy the Beemer to save a few bucks...lol. As for another bike, I'd like an R100GS Paris Dakar, or something like it. I know a few guys who love their V-Stroms and Wee-Stroms, but a super motard with knobbly tires would be super fun...like a KTM Enduro or a Duke.

I have my 1999 BMW K1200LT, which I picked up brand new on July 3, 1999. She just rolled over 178,000 original miles last week. I've taken her as far west as California, as far south as Key West, and as far north as Labrador. Even hit the eastern most point in North America (Cape Spear, NFLD). Yeah... I've been EVERYWHERE. She's my magic carpet and favorite vacation machine. She's just a little bit of "overkill" for going back and forth to work (but my wife LOVES her). We've tried the K1600GTL (even rented it for a week in Las Vegas) but you can't beat the LT for passenger comfort so we've stopped trying. The C650GT is MY baby for running back and forth to work and day to day riding. The car is parked 75% of the time (this past winter being the exception, not the rule).

I have a couple of favorites one was a 89 Honda PC 800 in pearl white it had good power, large trunk, yes a trunk that would lift up and you could put 4 bags of groceries also a built in stereo and good weather protection just a good touring bike. The other bike is a 3 wheeler a Can-Am 09 spyder with paddle shifter it would beat most any thing off the line and had no problem hitting 140 mph which I did once on I 91 here in Vt and other bike that I have is a Piaggio MP3 500 (Gelira Fuco) which is also a 3 wheel bike but you can lean the bike over 43 degrees in the turns it has 40 hp at the rear wheel it is quite different looking, people are always asking me what kind of bike is it,a good conversation starter.

My favorite bikes would also be about where I was riidng them as well. the Yamaha FZ6 I had in singapore was more than powerfull enough to pull thru traffic and narrow enough to split lanes on teh PIE (Pan Island Express) to get to work or ride anound with ease.
The First Gen Yamaha FZ1 had a beautiful red and was great for my vacation trips from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, three day ride up to Mai Hong son, two days there; High speed returns (top speed 260kph, Wide open throttle until stopping for fuel, 4 lane empty expressway), loved riding thru traffic there as well.
upon returning to the US I got the FZ1 (fuel inj) didn't like it as well.

those were my favorites.....
Honorable mention was the GL500 (honda) I rode in Japan. Dragging the exhaust thru the twisties going up the mountians was exciting and fun for the Japanese watching the sparks. he he

One of my favorites was my 1970 Yamaha CT-1B. Though far from one the biggest, fastest or flashiest bikes I owned it was tremendous fun to ride. I lived in Queens, N.Y.C. as that time and there were thousands of acres of deep lush parks in my area that ran for miles. I'd just simply go off road and pop out on the street where I needed to be. I'd meet other urban scramblers on the trails and we'd race through the woods. It was highly illegal, but then those were highly illegal times.

I put more than 40K miles on a KLR-650 but only about 200 of those miles was off road (partly because the machine isn't the best choice for that type of riding and also because it is not where my skills lie). I did enjoy commenting on it and tons of fun ignoring medians and curbs!
KTM may be too far the other direction (unless you're talking Duke). But I thnk suzuki makes the best dual-sport in there 400.
Of course, if money is no object, I can't imagine a nicer bike than a GS (they have so many to choose from these days).

Hard to go wrong on a KLR, decent used ones are low priced and the bike is a good trail rider if you don't go to extremes. Also it's a bike you can ride out to where you want to go off road, no trailer needed.

Really loved my 2001 R1150GS but sadly I couldn't ride it as much as I want to anymore hence I got e GT. Despite e bulk of weight it "boasted", I really find e handling good thanks to e low CG. I would definitely get that in future if my left wrist gets stronger...

My GT was feeling lonely in the garage so I picked up a mate for her today. A 1994 BMW K1100LT. I couldn't turn it down at $2800, the bike looks like new, the paint is nearly perfect, nice looking Corbin seat and two new tires. Even came with 3/4 tank of fuel. I spent some time today getting used to riding this one... I know tough duty but someone's got to do it. I just couldn't help it, they look so cute together.

I loved my old yamaha RZV500 from 20 odd years ago, it got written off and taken from my hands and i regret that to this day. Other than that, any 350lc.
Bikes i would love to own, KH750, R90s or my real fave, HP2 Sport, i really love it when one of these comes into the dealership.

I would have loved a 2-stroke v-4 500. When my father managed a yamaha shop we could get pictures, but could not import into the US. At most you would have to buy the RZ350 for the title and then go to Canada to get the RZ500 and do some title magic....
A 2-stroke that could spank the 1100's from light to light was so cool.

We used to see RZV500 Yamahas and RG500 Suzukis at the old Marcus Dairy Bar in Danbury, CT every Sunday. I always wondered how they ever got them into the States.

My favorite bike other than my step through is my other step through. I probably would have bought a GT but the BMW dealer thinks scooters are beneath there pay grade. I am still looking forward to the day I will get to ride a 650 GT.
